Singpost
Posted at 14:44.05 and filed under Rantings, SingaporeI’ve been bugged by something that has been sitting in my brain for damn long… You people know the upgraded/new letter boxes for HDB blocks, those with the lockable flaps that prevent the teeange boy who is being paid $5/hr to slot those useless flyers into ur letterbox from doing so.. I always thot that it’s a very good move, save paper and cut litter..but i’m having 2nd thots recently…
I realised that the amt of junk mail has been cut, but not totally..which is weird, cos only the postman has access to the master key that opens the entire array of letterboxes.. Small flyers mabbe able to be squeezed thru the tiny gap in the flap, but i dun think those thick cards can go thru… so there is only one possibility.. Singpost is delivering junk mail
When i told my sister how ethical is that, she said it is like yahoo/hotmail promising you that they will block all junk mail where in reality they block everything but not their own junk (Hotmail is even dumber, blocking yahoo! groups messages). They can do that w/o fear of repercussions simply cos they own the email facilities…no yahoo means no yahoo mail..u chose to click YES to those terms and conditions, and tying ur own hands.
Singpost is abit different imho.. the renovation and installation of the letterboxes are likely to be funded by HDB/ Town Councils/ Condominium management.. It’s just that Singpost is the monopoly of mail in sg, they gotta have access to all the boxes… but that does not mean they are free to send me junk mail.. In a way, it’s betrayal of trust, u trust Singpost to not give u junk mail, they have the key, they have the privillege to ur letterbox…Would u give your house key to a someone who will steal from your house?
I found this Direct Mail service, and on this sub-page, found info that was disturbing to say the least
DataSource
Gain access to a comprehensive database of 80,000 individuals who responded to the SingPost Lifestyle Survey. Covering lifestyle questions ranging from hobbies and interests, travel, finance, and IT usage, this database is excellent in helping you build a list of prospects that match your direct marketing offer.
TargetSource
Choose from a database of over 2.4 million names and addresses segmented by age, gender, household type/value and profession. The merit of this list lies in its property related information.
HomeDirect This list lets you target every single household and commercial unit in Singapore via addressed letterbox drops. Additional information on ethnic group and whether a household has elderly, preschoolers, maids or pets is also available for 80,000 addresses. This allows you to add a little more personalization with a DM piece which reads “Dear Mom & Dad” etc.
AdMail
Unaddressed mail is an economical and accurate way to reach new customers without the need for addresses. Targetting can be done via postal code, location boundaries, and property type. SingPost's proprietary geo-mapping tools also allow you to target units within a specified radius.

And it’s not cheap either, to send a 25g card to a hdb flat costs 6 cents…Say u’re talking about 1 estate of more than 5000 units…that’s already 300 bucks..damn
I’m already silently protesting, and thinking how to bring it up to public attn, other than this post here.. Every junk mail i get from them, i chuck it back into the Returned Mail box, simply because i never requested for the condo flyer, nor the kfc flyer… they dun belong to me, i dun need them..back to singpost it goes..
Bearing in mind that Singpost is a monopoly of mail in sg, there is a need for them to be accountable, and i think we deserve an explaination here..
