Not every club needs to pay the big bucks like Chelski to get their man… off Soccernet:

Romanian club swaps defender for hunk of meat

BUCHAREST, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Romanian second division soccer club UT Arad sold a player in exchange for 15 kilograms of meat, local sport daily Pro Sport reported on Monday.

That is not the end of the story btw, talk about having a twist in the tale

However, fourth division Regal Horia made a bad deal because defender Marius Cioara decided to end his footballing career and take off to Spain to find a job in agriculture or construction. ‘We are upset because we lost twice - firstly because we lost a good player and secondly because we lost our team’s food for a whole week,‘ a Regal Horia official was quoted as saying by the daily in its electronic edition.

QC ur bazaar pls!

Posted at 18:50.34 and filed under aNUS, Rantings, Singapore

NUS Students’ Computing Club really need to QC the vendors they invited for their bazaar.

‘Indulgence Bazaar’ Date: Monday, February 27, 2006 At 09:00 AM Duration: 5 Days Stress over your mid-terms?? Bored of the canteen food?? Want something to do during your breaks?? Come and indulge in Indulgence Bazaar. A variety of stalls from accessories, clothes to food. Keep a look out for more updates.

Check out some of their wares… OEM (read: CHAO PIRATE)soccer jerseys, England’s without the umbro logo.. u find most big european teams on the same rack.

They have Ramly burger stalls that were doing brisk business during lunch time, to the extent that by 5pm they had to resort to alternative chicken patties.
Since when Ramly chicken patties come cold, and look just like seaweed chicken nuggets? Ramly my ass..

from wikipedia, Ramly burger’s wiki

The Ramly Burger is distinctive from most other hamburgers due to the unique way in which the ingredients are served. Rather than the usual method of stacking the ingredients within the bun, the patty in the Ramly Burger is first covered with the desired condiments, then wrapped in a thin layer of egg. The end result is packet-like and enhances the texture of the burger while simultaneously reducing mess from the condiments.

Despite its popularity among Singaporeans, the Ramly Burger is banned in Singapore, along with all other Malaysian beef products. However, several stalls have smuggled the burger, albeit illegally, into the country. In particular, Ramly Burger stalls are rampant in pasar malams, which are harder to track due to their itinerant nature.

I rest my case

Sledging SMU

Posted at 14:38.52 and filed under aNUS

A lecture on acne went off tangent, drastically to say the least. The prof was talking about how acne affects ppl’s confidence levels, then she went on to talk about her ex-student who has bad acne problems but is now a PhD. Then she went on to say about nus career centre offering courses on interviews and CVs. Then she started to diss off SMU..

smu, the ppl inside kosong, but they got nice wrapping paper u ppl @ nus inside got thing, but use lousy wrapping paper n scotch tape

ns is a occupational hazard, cos u all put camouflaage, crawl thru bushes…but once they come nus, they start to look better..so gals, give them a chance guys, dun go for smu gals, only got packaging
u dun need to aim for high pay 1st jobs, cos there is less potential for further growth if u start high..so leave all the smu students to get those jobs

quite a few top a level grads went to smu, n within few mths came to nus to beg for a place in any fac..cos they realised smu no content

What started out as a good day all went downhill within the morning, hitting rockbottom just b4 noon. The afternoon and evening was great, before it kind of went down again, not as badly, but it still sucks.

If i were to summarise all this into 1 phrase: holland in the middle of nowhere

Economical theory in real life

Posted at 21:03.28 and filed under Musings, Singapore

i saw 2nd-degree price discrimination being practised yesterday in a very interesting setting..

You know those ice-cream men on bikes? Usually they sell a slice of the ice cream with bread/waffle for 1 dollar.. about an inch in thickness, the slice of ice cream.

Well the man outside indoor stadium last nite after oasis concert, he wasn’t exactly raising up his prices indiscriminately. He was selling for 2 dollars, a 2 inch slab of ice cream, which is kind of ALOT, to put it gently.

When asked, he claims that the blocks are already cut nicely by his supplier, so he can’t do anything about it. And he said this while holding a knife in his hand (duh!)

I din complain, too tired, and the uncle was pretty nice about it.. so i just enjoyed my 2 dollars, 2 inch slab of jagung ice cream in between 2 thin wafers. O yah, did i mention, he gave complimentary pack of tissue paper. cool…

Funny

Posted at 02:17.12 and filed under Uncategorized

Or rather, my cheap sense of humour found it so when i was reading the intro to someone’s nohari window, just the para in bold ;)

The Nohari Window is a challenging inversion of the Johari Window, using antonyms of the original words. By describing your failings from a fixed list of adjectives, then asking your friends and colleagues to describe you from the same list, a grid of perceived and unrecognised weaknesses can be explored.

You’re reading this page because thong wants to know how you’d describe him or her - pick the five or six words from the list below that you think represent thong’s most significant weaknesses, however slight.

Warning: If you’re hacking URLs, this might not be the thong you know, it could just be someone else who’s used the name. Ask your thong if this is really their Nohari Window.

Open Letter to Prof Shih

Posted at 13:22.27 and filed under aNUS, Rantings

Open Letter to Prof. Shih Choon Fong, NUS President:

How to raise the revenue of NUS w/o raising school fees Here are some ways that NUS can raise money, without having to raise sch fees. Helps to save on the number of pigheads that you may need to hang outside poor students’ houses.

  1. As a world-class university, we must go truely cashless, so every newly-matriculated student during medical checkup has to have a radio tag inserted under the skin. You can buy the tag @ $X and charge the student $5X, and conveniently bill it under admin fees. Every payment on campus would be done via this chip, and the monies would be conveniently deducted from the student’s giro acct. There is no need to send monthly statements, we are paperless too.. put everything online… let students check..never check means approve.. ;)
  2. Convert all nus admin offices’ websites to PPV (Pay-Per-View). Every student has to login with their id b4 they can access information on their site. Load page 1 time 3 cents. Use cmi servers, like the one for CORS last yr, i like those.. totally unreliable. Remember, dun be a dumb ass and put all your info. Just put a bit as bait.
  3. Bait for wat? of cos for them to call your 1900 hotlines lah.. OSA could be 1900-CALL-OSA, etc.. Then u would ask about the labour costs, no worries, outsource to bangladesh. Nevermind if they dunno about nus, they can learn.. whatever they dunno, better still..just take more time over the phone.. cals are at $1 per minute. 600,000 mins of talktime can get u 1 peanut.
  4. Register ur modules via CORS online, on the phone line to be exact. 1900-MODULES. NUS being an international village, we should cater for different languages
Welcome to the National University of Singapore’s Centralised Online Registration System 欢迎使用新加坡国立大学综合网上注册系统 [Malay] [Tamil] [Hindi] [French] [Japanese] [Italian] [Greek] For Italian, press 1 For German, press 2 : : For English, press 12
And u press 12, it goes into italian 1st, remember waste more time = get more money
  5. Every arts student would tell u that the walkway from Central Library to Arts canteen is damn packed during peak hours, just like how CTE-city is packed in morning and CTE-amk is packed in evening.. Remember the radio tag that you forced everyone to insert under skin? Set up ERP gantry along there lor, charge ppl 1 dollar to walk that stretch during peak hours.. dun wanna pay? can..just go down 1 floor n walk smokers’ alley, and get lung cancer. Or go walk along the road, and get lung cancer. Remember to say that the reason for implementing ERP is not to get more money but to “regulate usage”. After that you can set up gantries elsewhere too, like walkways n staircases in SRC during exam season, at UCC during commencement ceremonies.
  6. IT age means computers and internet access easily available, so as a world class uni, you must have them for free usage. but they never say anything about making keyboards and mice avail. Rent them out for 3 bucks/hr.
  7. Yet in another attempt to “regulate usage”, you can of course start payment for use of study rooms, at say YIH for example. Per second billing at 12 cents per min..cheaper than starhub mobile calls. Your tables must have weight sensors, so if any one rests head on table to sleep, the rate increase to 30 cents/min. See still got ppl dare to sleep n waste space in reading room or not. Same thing pay with radio tag when enterin and leaving room.
  8. Sleepyheads can make use of the increased hall facilities, i mean, surely we bought warren not to build more halls for ppl to waste time on rag n flag rite..of cos they have to be for budget hotels! 2 hr block 50 dollars….u can do watever u want, sleep, mate, watch tv, screw, play games, have sex…u get the idea. Condoms machine is a must too… SDU offers cash grants if u can have a project where @ least 30 ppl of 6:4 (guys:gals) ratio are in close proximity. So you can organise *ahem* parties @ warren.
  9. Replace your shuttle buses, every one of them with BMW Z4s World Class uni must have world class services, how can the comfort buses do for us? Assuming 1 bus sits 50, that makes 50 z4 per bus, and 50 drivers. You must be dreaming if the students can drive those cars, they wun come back with them, take gf with them in the car..then ur hotel 81 can close shop. Charge 10 bucks per ride. Bar all vehicles on campus, remove all sheltered-walkways and increase the chances that they will take ur z4.
  10. Yet in another bid to “reduce wastage”, we have to ration toilet paper. That’s where ur radio tag comes in useful. It’s like ezlink payment, just that u would never forget to bring ur payment device unlike ur wallet, unless u chop off ur hand of cos.. so each time someone sits on toilet bowl and needs paper, all he needs to do is raise hand towards the paper roll.. *beep beep*, 3 pieces come out @ 10 cents. damn lelong liaoz ok. For external visitors, sorry hor..no chip no paper. Want chip go medical centre n buy for $10X.

Then dun be a stupid ass and do things like cutting professors salaries hor..

Who has not read about the serangoon murder? Please climb out of your hole leh.. Anyway it turns out that it’s no simple robbery-turned-murder, but a hired job. The victim probably offended another gang, who then hired professional killer to “fix the problem”, “terminate him” or “斩草除根”.

And so the next thing that comes to mind when we think of the professional killer is that he would look something like this: 小马哥!!

He would probably use a weapon like this to avoid detection:

Making his entrance and escape in a cool sports car that he paid with his fees from previous deals:

Reality check! wake up! Killers, most of them aren’t like above..even the hired guns

I bet they rode on malaysian-plated kupkias, did the job and quickly piah back via causeway..early morning still no jam mah…

May the 2 chaps be arrested soon…

The Johari Window was invented by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingram in the 1950s as a model for mapping personality awareness. By describing yourself from a fixed list of adjectives, then asking your friends and colleagues to describe you from the same list, a grid of overlap and difference can be built up.

Nohari window is the same, just that it focuses on the negatives instead…do me a favour and do them for me if u noe me personally..

Happy Valentine’s Day to all.. i’m really happy today, cos i have a great date, that started from 2pm this afternoon..and it’s going on till 10pm @ least..

I think i’m really lucky to meet someone as great as her, without her my life would not be complete. Time seems to pass so fast whenever i’m with her, and she never lets me down in front of my frens, who always see her as one with depth, though not really of surface beauty.

But i can hardly care less for negative opinions about her, i want to be with her.. she completes my life… o we snapped a pic together : : : : : Me with my love: “Lecture Notes on PC3130: Quantum Mechanics 2″

Have a good evening u ppl ;)

NUSSU NEWSFLASH

Fee Hike

Dear fellow students,

The NUS Students’ Union (NUSSU) met with the University Administration on Friday, 10th February 2006, and was informed of an impending increase in tuition fees. The administration took efforts to explain the rationale of such an increase to us.

Despite our vigorous objection to the fee increase for AY2006/2007, remembering that the last fee increase was in AY2005/2006, the University Administration still deems such a measure necessary in order to keep up with cost increases. NUSSU is also disappointed that despite requests to be more involved in discussions for school policies affecting the students, there is no consultation before this fee hike is announced to the Union. Nevertheless, we are committed to exploring with the University Administration on viable ways of consultative engagement pertaining to school policies affecting our students.

The University Administration has given NUSSU the assurance that it will channel more money for financial aid for needy students in the form of bursaries and to fund new and innovative schemes such as the Subsistence Loan and the Work-Study Assistance scheme. Following the discussion with NUSSU, the administration has agreed to further increase this commitment – in total, the administration will be setting aside an additional $3million for financial aid schemes for AY2006/2007. NUS remains committed to ensuring that no deserving student is denied a tertiary education because of financial difficulty. More information about the financial packages may be obtained at the following link: http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/sfau/main.htm

Similarly, NUSSU manages its own NUS Students’ Fund Bursary for needy students, more information of which may be obtained here: http://nussu.nus.edu.sg/~nussf/index.htm

The last round of bursaries and book grants has just been awarded and the next round of applications will be from 1 September 2006 to 30 September 2006.

NUSSU remains committed in upholding the interests and welfare of the students. We value your feedback at (nussu_welfare@yahoo.com.sg) and will encourage active discussions in the IVLE portal, under the link: “Fee Hike Response”.

We thank you for your kind attention to this matter.

Regards, Quek Boon Guan Danny President Executive Committee 27th NUSSU Council

aNUS just screwed our your asses again.. what’s new.. everyone leaves with a larger asshole after life in nus..It doesn’t mean that by providing more bursaries u can alleviate the effects of yet another rise in fees, it also means that for students who are not well-off but not poor enuff to qualify for aid, they are screwed big time.

Knowing how aNUS is run, they will listen to feedback, and “yes yes we understand”. End of day it will be

“We have heard from the student population that most people are opposed to the rise in feeds, but due to our ever increasing need to add more courses, build a nus high school with running track and tennis courts, build a big building for YST, and maintain our admin building which is representative of the fact that we are a top quartile uni (18 drop to 22), we have to raise fees. Those who are rich, pls pay. Those who are poor, no worries, we do a robin hood n take from the rich students to pay for you so that we can say we got action.. Those neither here nor there, well, we would just pretend that u’re not there…”

corrinne may and other stuff

Posted at 01:53.13 and filed under aNUS, Musings

And so the dreaded week has started, what with nuclear test today and qm2 test on friday. Nuclear test, i dunno wat to say, very long time never did so high-pressure MCQs? 10 qns, 4 options each, total weightage for final grade..15%!! that’s like 1.5 percent per qn lah, literally determines whether u’re A or A+ (in my case, C+ or B-)

It was pretty lucky to go listen to corrinne may today, and even more special as the 1st time i’m paying for an event @ ucc.. she was pretty good last nite over @ the hall, but today she really rocked my socks off. She sang more or less the same set of songs as last nite but i guess in the cosier environment of the theatre, it was way better.. The company was good too, andrea, teck n his gf jay, carlin and tj…

I think the part that made me really like corrinne may wasn’t her singing but her total lack of airs. Sunday nite, she took about 2.5 hrs to sign autographs for everyone who was willing to wait in line. And no, she didn’t force u to buy her cds, she gave out posters n flyers n autographed on them, personalised with ur name on top..u want 1, she gave..2, or 3, or more..she obliged with a smile. Take pics etc..no problem! The one that really clinched it was when shane complimented corrinne on her shoes and asked where she bought it. Corrinne lifted up her foot in a tak-glam pose but that really showed how ease she is with fans.. ;)

Don’t be jealous :P

The photoshopped money problem seems to have been sorted out which is good. Looking back, it’s a wise move to eventually remove all the details, as an email to MAS proved that it’s fucking illegal to do it. Huike did say that a mark lee show got him singing a song on tv, with his face over yusof ishak’s. However i still believe that for such matters, it’s better to err on the side of caution.

I’m working for nus openhouse 06 in march, under the ORCS. Talk about sleeping with the enemy man…i figured that it would be a good experience and since they are paying a decent rate of close to 7 bucks per hr, it’s pretty ok with me.. wanted to apply for tour guide, ie stationed on bus n bring ppl ard campus..the interview was pretty interesting.. 3 of us, with 3 interviewers.. i was with 1 quiet gal and a laidback guy, very very laidback i must say.. i mean, wat kind of impression u wanna give with this?

*enters room, take seat n slides butt down, cross legs* Him: How long would this take? OCR: 10-15 mins? Him: Ok let’s make it 10, i’m in a rush

The questions were asked to nobody in particular, you have to take turns to answer. So seeing this, i took the chance to answer 1st. Being the kiasu bugger i was, i answered all the qns 1st, which ensured that for stuff like “tell me about usp”, i could say about 60% of the content n let the rest touch up the rest. The laidback guy was pretty vocal too, so i kind of pity the gal who got stuck in this kind of F up grp where she had little or no chance to say anything really impressive.

This qn really reminded me of those ushering interviews, “Say there is a parent who wants to go to bizad from src to listen to a talk, but the bus is not here yet n she’s getting angry, what would you do?”

Gal (answering 1st for 1st time): I will apologise n check bus timings for her Laidback Guy: If there are buses available solely for openhouse, i would call a bus to come down immediately Me (giving cliche ans): Ok we must 1st realise that the guest is not angry with us personally, he’s just pissed that he’s not getting a bus there on time.. so we need to show that we understand his situation n try to help accordingly. As a helper, we should have access to the bus schedule n talk schedule too, so that i can advise him accordingly. When the bus comes, ensure that he boards the bus, preferrably ahead of other guests so that he knows that we are making an effort to make things to him. Lastly if possible, show him there urself, accompany him on bus. If that’s not possible, give him ur name n number so that he can contact u if any problems

How standard is that answer, i think that, and the relevent ushering experience made them give me the post of…

TALK USHER

what the…wanna do something else oso cannot…nvm..think of the money… it’s all about the money…

I’m perturbed by this picture (picture has been removed, @ least for time being, those who know me personally, pls ask me if u really wanna see) which i took at central forum where it was displayed as part of the publicity of a NUS Hall’s Drama Production.

Yes you didnt see wrongly, they took a 50buck note, scanned and photoshopped in their cast.. Promotional gimmick u may say, i’m wondering if they may fall foul of the Currency Act caption 20 specifically..

Restriction on use of photographs, drawing or design of currency notes and coins in advertisements, etc.

20. —(1) Except with the permission of the Authority, no person shall — (a) in any size, scale or colour, use any photograph of or any drawing or design resembling any currency note or coin or part thereof, in any advertisement; or (b) import, manufacture, sell, circulate or otherwise distribute any merchandise or product containing such a photograph, drawing or design in any size, scale or colour.

From a person involved in the overall management of the production, apparently no permission was seeked sought (corrected by HY, thanks). For all i noe, i could have misintepretated the caption wrongly. I hope so, too many friends involved in this. Waiting for updates here..

Update (caa 3.20am 9th feb) My friend just called me and said that this post is being circulated within the hall, and they are doing damage control 1. The “notes” have been removed from forum 2. The “notes” have been destroyed to the best of knowledge. 3. The ppl involved have realised that they could be breaking the law unknowingly and hence have taken the a/m steps to correct this. Kudos to the fast reaction. 4. The act of defacement of currency is fucking illegal according to a trusted source. Hence details have been removed accordingly. The whole purpose of this post is to raise awareness, not get undergrads into blown-up trouble This post will stay here, no matter what. Updates, positive or negative ones would be added accordingly.

Pathetic attempt to win blogfest

Posted at 23:11.19 and filed under aNUS, Musings

I’ve signed up for NUS Blogfest’06 but competition is obviously fierce, not just for serious bloggers who wanna make their blogs famous. Hai~Ren has declared that he wanna win Best NUS blog, if not for taking a step to becoming a semi-famous blogger, otherwise just for the mp3 player. With fierce competition like this, i shall make it a point to try harder and blog more these days, despite the lack of time (n sleep, as seen in my prev photo). In fact i will try to talk more about life in aNUS, a top quartile university.. heck! i will even try to say good things about it, and this will be the biggest challenge or stunt that i’m attempting. Please support me by depositing into my POSB Savings Account, no need call 1900-something… just ask me for the account number yea. . :D

This week really no time to breathe i realise, with 2 tests coming up next week. Nuclear on monday, quantum mech 2 on friday. The schedule seems ok until i realised that i’ve effectively burnt my weekend by signing for Canoeing Sub-Club’s Explore de Quays on saturday afternoon, and i’m ushering on fri n sun nites. So that means this week must burn more midnight oil n mug till 3am then sleep. So effectively i’m transforming myself into a zombie, all in the hope of making more friends at canoeing (it’s a SDU-sponsored event!) and listening to corrinne may sing (i wanna do insider!)

I can go on and on about my core modules this semester, nuclear has the most teruk notes and one of the more longwinded textbooks around, dun forget it has dancing professor. Talk about bad omen, i dropped my new textbook, only 2 days old, into the longkang just now n it got stained… QM, everyone noes that all physics majors bitch about it, u can see it big big on my msn nick. One person thought that QM stands for Quantitative Methods, another thought that it’s Quality Management. It’s scarier, it’s Quantum Mechanics 2. I have few gripes only, prof englert goes damn fast and doesn’t give breaks. No lah kidding, he gives breaks every 10 minutes for 20 seconds when he erases the just-filled up whiteboard. So for 20 secs i will look at kenny n teck soon n we say the same thing: “wtf just happened?”. Of course his handwritten notes, i’m becoming good at reading englert’s script, next time i can work @ history museum reading ancient documents.

I’ve heard interesting things about canoeing this saturday, it’s a joint nus-smu event, and in order to get sdu funding, you have to ensure that ur event has @ least 30 ppl i think, with a sex ratio of 6:4 (men:women) and they must be in close proximity at all times. All these to make sure sg has enuff babies next time. So wat i heard is that we will all go in double-seater kayaks, paddle up singapore river with 1 partner of the opp. sex, come back with another partner, ie. speed-dating on the water. Remind me to take my motion sickness medicine, if not how to impress the potentially hot date(s), definitely not by showing her literally what i had for breakfast lor..

It’s gonna be a corrinne may special these few days, working for her 1st show, watching her 2nd show, and guess wat, listened to her sing @ central forum just now :D but seriously, she’s DAMN good! Hannah was singing as well, 2 songs i think. She managed to get over her nervousness by her second song, so yea good for her..man if that gal can sing like this when she’s sick, i wanna hear her again when she’s well.. (now only need someone to bug me to buy tix for jazzband concert). Move over corrinne may! She has her own rabid fan though, there was this lady who imho, looked abit too excited. She definitely doesnt look undergrad, and yea the MC was having quizzes, giving away pairs of tickets to arts fest events..so she was damn enthu n ran down to ans 1st qn, got it correct, and was probably disappointed when they gave her other tix, as opposed to corrinne may’s. So later when the MC in 2-3 rounds later started to give out corrinne may tix, she ran down to the performance area, but the MC told her no, cos she already took part earlier. So she just stood there, 3 metres away from the MC, seriously, no joke.. n didnt leave until 2-3 mins later when all the 3 pairs of tix have been won…

i wanna leave the sheares hall production gimmick for another post..so let’s just end this here.. ;)

The Arts Club and the CNM Society of NUS invites all students and staff across all faculties in NUS to join in the fun! The fate of selected blogs will be decided by voters. Anyone with internet access is welcome to take part in the voting! Whether the seleced blogs become winners or get axed out of the competition, voters decide! In return for the voters’ efforts, one voter will stand to win a mystery gift!

Got a few interesting blogposts off my bloglines

Via Tomorrow.sg, a eating.html”"target=”_blank”>post about Al-Ameen opposite Beauty World…

“Around 20 years ago, this place was considered “death-row”. Shops would open and close within 3-6 months. The Charcoal Grill, Bee Choon Hiang and the Teochew Porridge shop were the only bastions of culinary survival in this strip of car repair shops and dentists.”

Via BlogsMalaysia, this guy chronicled his love life with his dream gal, from meeting, to falling in love, to getting married, and to divorce..

“My lovely sweetheart and I, we are no longer together. This afternoon, we went to the courts, and we did it proper. We filed for a divorce. Now, we can start over. Separately.”

My classmate, Sucre blogs about how Mashimaro is hung out to dry, literally..
