Election Suggestion

Uncle Lee said so:
MM Lee

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who leads the six-man Tanjong Pagar team, also plans to lend a helping hand to constituencies that are facing a battle. He, too, expressed regret at the lack of competition. “We are sorry to have disappointed Tanjong Pagar voters … but the work goes on,” he said in his speech after nominations closed at Bendemeer Primary and Secondary School.

And so did Uncle Goh
SM Goh

Addressing PAP supporters at the nomination centre, SM Goh said: “Dear friends and residents of Marine Parade GRC, we have been given a walkover. The Workers’ Party’s slogan is “You have a choice” but unfortunately they haven’t given you, our dear voters, a choice in the Marine Parade GRC.” Mr Goh added: “We have a fresh team in Marine Parade GRC. I shall give more time to them to speak to you. But I want to thank you for your support all these years. From 1976 to now, you have given me very strong support. I thank you very much for your support. I want to thank the supporters over here for turning up.”

And my electronic polling card shares the same sentiments…

Walkover

Are Singaporeans ready for a referendum? Walkovers are a strong part of the local political landscape, with about half of Singapore in terms of land area being unaffected by the GE due to walkovers. How many 1st time potential voters are not able to vote as a result, how many ppl have not gotten a chance to vote in their adult lives?

Come to think of it, it’s pretty easy to get a walkover. Your grassroots, party and political machinery could be so strong that nobody, independent or political party dares to come and fight you, simply because it would be a fultile battle and may end up losing their deposits (Read: PAP). . You could be from a reputable party and fuck yourself when you botch up your nomination papers and don’t get to run, giving the other party a walkover (Read: WP in Aljunied, 2001). The ruling party can, for all you know, botch up their own papers and the ward ends up with an independent MP who is running for the sake of running and has no clearcut ideas on how to improve his ward.

We of course trust the PAP to not do the last item. However accidents do happen from time to time. Is there a mechanism to rectify this error? I would say most ppl would agree with the PAP’s policies, but should there be a more concrete and quantitative way of gauging the support a party’s team has in their ward? One of cos can argue that the number of grassroots people who made their way to the nomination stations, and the aunties who rush to shake hands with the minister during walkabouts are clear signs of support. Without trying to diss these ppl off, let’s just say that it would not be that hard to get a few hundred retirees from your ward to come support you, given the right encouragement.

A referendum serves to address a few issues. The main one is providing a quantitative check of the ward’s approval of the sole or incumbent candidates. Strength, real or perceived, may prevent other parties from competing in that ward. Perceived strength may be due to poor grassroots information on the sentiments of the ward’s residents. Hence it is important to provide residents with a Get Out of Jail card. It would allow voters to vote out the sole competing candidate or group of candidates with say, a 60% no-confidence vote. On the other hand, it could provide the resounding vote of confidence that residents place with the sole candidate.

A referendum would be a good chance for the rest of Singapore to experience polling, and for the Election Dept to test its full system across the whole of Singapore. It can be easily seen that having polls only in about half of Singapore makes it easier for the dept to gather resources and cluster them in order to make the whole process smoother. Many civil servants, including teachers are earmarked as helpers during elections, it would be a good chance to test them and the various resources, including polling centres that would be put into use.

A softer approach to the referendum system would be to make it voluntary, and non-commital. The candidate who receives the walkover has the freedom to call for and hold a referendum as a a gauge of the popular support, or to debunk the views of external parties including rival political parties. The fear of losing the seat in the referendum could be removed by making it into solely a survey of sorts. If the confidence level is low, the incumbent could be placed on probation for say, 2 years before a second referendum that is binding be called for. The second referendum would allow voters to assess the incumbent’s performance, and need be, remove him or her.

All these seems to make for a unstable government. However I would like to think that it is as much as a survival of the fittest as the current political system is. Given the fact that the current strength of the PAP makes it the only party that is likely to enjoy walkovers, the referendum system would serve as a method for voters to feedback on the performance of the incumbent MP. It is also highly unlikely that Government-in-power at that particular time could be displaced by multiple referendums.

End of crapping, all these due to a bottle of Long Island Tea ;)

25 Great Calvin & Hobbes Strips

“…And it’s really a shame that it’s so difficult to quantify this strip’s greatness. I can confidently state that Calvin & Hobbes outclasses the rest of the comic strip world more than anything else has ever outclassed the rest of its medium. Sans this strip, the industry is characterized by guys sitting on rocks making stupid puns, a Family Circus kid misunderstanding the meaning of a word, or an overweight father playing golf while telling jokes such as I LIKE GOLF and GOLF IS HARD. It’s a medium that doesn’t really deserve something as good as Calvin & Hobbes, but it got it anyway, and the newspaper-reading world was made a better place by it. …”

Why opposition doesn’t come to Bukit Timah

Posted at 00:13.12 and filed under Musings, Singapore

My poor attempt at talking politics after physics exams

And so election fever has finally hit Singapore, and as usual, we are never concerned about which party will be elected. We are only concerned about the percentage of the popular vote obtained by PAP, and whether or not Potong Pasir and Hougang comes back under PAP, or would they miss upgrading for another time.

Elections period, life goes on in my area, Bukit Timah. As expected, the PAP got a walkover for the area as part of the Holland-Bt Timah GRC. To say that Bukit Timah is a stronghold is pretty much an understatement. In summary, Bt Timah is as stable as a mountain (pun intended)

Out of kaypoh-ness curiosity, I took a look at the Elections Dept website for a look at the results of the past elections in Bt Timah, and it was pretty interesting

Year & TypeWinning Party (%)
1955 Legislative AssemblyPAP (52.45%)
1959 Legislative AssemblyPAP (58.31%)
1963 Legislative AssemblyBarisan Sosialis (52.39%)
1966 Legislative By-ElectionPAP (Walkover)
1968 Parliamentary ElectionPAP (Walkover)
1972 Parliamentary ElectionPAP (66.78%)
1976 Parliamentary ElectionPAP (Walkover)
1980 Parliamentary ElectionPAP (Walkover)
1984 Parliamentary ElectionPAP (Walkover)
1988 Parliamentary ElectionPAP (Walkover)
1991 Parliamentary ElectionPAP (72.64%)
1997 Parliamentary ElectionPAP (Walkover as a GRC)
2001 Parliamentary ElectionPAP (77.37%)

You can just see how dominant PAP is in Bt Timah, only lost once in 1963, marking the 2nd time that Bt Timah fell out of the govt’s hands.

Off wikipedia…

The Battle of Bukit Timah was a momentous battle fought during World War II on 11 February 1942 in Singapore between the Allied forces and the Japanese forces. The battle was one of the bloodiest during the Japanese conquest, with staggering casualties suffered on both the defending locals who fought with the Allied forces, and the invading Japanese forces. Bukit Timah was a strategic location where the British have stockpiled ammunition and armoured and transportation vehicles. The hill also faces a body of important resource - a reservoir.

To say that Bt Timah ppl (Timahans? haha!) are politically apathetic may be too blanketing of a word in this case.. I say that the economic status of the residents and the physical infrastructure of the area leaves the Opposition with hardly any fodder to fight with. Even for PAP, it’s mainly the process of maintaining the current pace of development, and not really going all out to try something new.

This place is a bloody rich men area lah.. the main cluster of flats here are the 19 blocks in toh yi drive. Those blocks are not that old, probably about 17 years, and i’ve stayed here for 15. This is the so-called ghetto of Bt Timah, the poor men area. And mind you, my neighbours are not that poor, I see dunno how many plasma tv boxes being dumped @ the refuse collection point, many big cars, including a Z4 and a Fairlady. We are just poor, as compared to the condo/landed property people.

So there is not much point in campaigning for covered walkways and lifts that stop at every level. Not to say that there isn’t a need for them, it’s just that we can still live w/o them. And no point building covered walkways into the private estates. ppl would be driving most of the time…

Come to think of it, there are many post-65ers here, ppl who are more receptive to new ideas from a credible Opposition. Let’s hope the absorption into a GRC is only a one-off affair to protect the area from fallign into the Opposition’s hands since the incumbent MP Dr Wang Kai Yuen is stepping down after 22 years.

“Next election must come here hor, let me exercise my right of universal suffrage as a citizen”

Joan Chan, the Fighter

Sunday, 23 April 2006
Posted at 12:54.15 and filed under Musings, Links and such, Singapore

” RGS is raising funds to help a cancer-stricken ex-student Joan Chan Shu Fang (RGS 2002/RJC 2004) who was a Peer Support Leader and 1st sergeant in NCC and captain of the RJC softball team.

In 2005, Shu Fang was diagnosed with tongue cancer Stage 4 and as a result, gave up her place to study Architecture in NUS. She underwent surgery, after which she was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. During a second operation on her shoulder, it was discovered that Shu Fang was suffering from skin cancer as well.

Unfortunately, chemotherapy has not worked and her situation has deteriorated. She has less than a year to live if treatment with a trial drug Iressa, fails. Iressa has shown to kill off some of the cancer cells but results are still inconclusive. The cost of Iressa is S$110.30 per tablet and she requires 2 tablets a day due to her worsening condition, bringing the total medical bill to a hefty S$6000 a month. This is a great financial burden to her family as her mother has had to quit her job to look after Shu Fang. Her father, a taxi driver, too has had to limit his working hours per day to watch over her in case of an emergency. RGS hopes to raise an amount of $36,000 to cover Shu Fang’s medical bills & treatment for 6 months.

If you feel moved to help give Shu Fang a shot at life, please issue your cheque to “RGS” and write “Chan Shu Fang Fund” at the back of the cheque, together with your name & contact address/e-mail. You can mail the cheque to RGS at 20 Anderson Road, Singapore 259978. Thank you. “

I am very lucky i realised, that i’m spared from all these illnesses. Nobody I know is dying too. I think it’s only when you encounter ppl like Joan, then u realise that the world is not so perfect after all. What spurred me to put this appeal here, is the very fact that Joan doesn’t give up easily. For someone her age, it is very ez to simply throw in the towel and que sera sera. Yet there she is, not giving on the slightest hope that one day she may get well, that one day she would be able to join her friends in university and lead a normal life.

Joan in her blog

…my options are limited and i just want to say my dear friends, i am prepared for the worst. but i want to thank all of you for your love and care. i will not give up till the very end and i hope i will be remembered in your hearts as a fighter always.

That pretty much sums up her attitude.

I plead with readers, to do what you all can. I personally dunno how much I can spare, probably a token sum. Every dollar, every cent counts here. You are not just helping her, but also her family, and possibly future cancer patients if a fund is set up in her name for that.

Confessions of a teenage cancer patient

Imagine having to cope with cancer at 18? This is one lesson no one will ever learn in school but it turned out to be the lesson of my life. (more…)

is a killer lah, cosmetics and perfumes. Listen, it’s not a module about understanding, not how powerful ur cpu (brain) is, but how much hard disk space (memory work) u have. The only good thing about this module is that probably can scrap thru with @ least a B-, and the way scripts are collected. We were made to go up to the front, row by row to hand up. So everyone walks past everyone, and did i mention that this module is full of chiobu? Mabbe the proportion’s the same but the sheer number (600) in the class makes it more likely to spot a chiobu. So yes, we essentially had a fashion parade in the class.
UCC senior ushers may know this plaque gal during commencement, the one who walked up to me with a, erm..well-endowed chest n left my jaw gaping. I still stress it’s because that i was surprised that she’s my classmate who has turned from an ugly duckling in p6 to a almost-can-make-it swan; and not her bouncing assets that make me gape. Well she took this module too, and i only realised it today. No i didn’t gape today

Lastly, how the hell did claudia’s hamsters do this???

I bet kenny will like this, claudia u mabbe keen to use this to let ur hammies exercise too ;) From Engadget,

VR Games Pit Pets Against Owners If you’ve ever wanted to match wits with your pet hamster, Mice Arena could be the game for you. hamster game As in a traditional video game, players navigate a virtual world in a bid to stay alive. The twist? Computerized movements in Mice Arena are mapped to and from the real world, where an actual predator (your hamster) gives chase to a digital avatar (you) by pursuing a real piece of bait. The avatar’s movements in the virtual environment direct the bait around a small tank fitted with actuators that mold and twist an elastic latex floor into the changing terrain of the game map. The hamster’s pursuit in the tank is monitored by infra-red sensors that relay its position to the computer screen.

Voyeurs Abound!

Posted at 13:39.56 and filed under aNUS, Rantings

Ed: Case closed, I have no more gripes with the person..all is peaceful, yesh. ;) I’ve removed the links to his blog.

The days are getting boring, wake up 10-11am..bathe..read papers, go sch n stay there till 3am.. Like now, i’ve just bathed n waiting for hair to dry before i head to sch. Prof Chan said that we should let our hair dry naturally, if not it would become brittle. That includes blowdrying, and i guess, flattening the hair in the helmet, not to mention making my helmet inner lining damp..sucks!

Back to the main subject, a blogger or a blogder should never underestimate the power of internet search engines, especially those that are meant for blogs, like Technorati and Icerocket. Input the name of this blog, and see what u can find. It shows up a list of blog entries that has ur name or ur link. Searching for jkaiser would give u many links to Hai~Ren’s blog, showing how devoted he is to me. And by mentioning his online moniker here, I have added another hit to his blog search.

Syndicating the search makes it even more powerful. You don’t have to constantly go search, each time there is a new hit, i will know. Each time a person mentions my name in his post, I will know. Each time a blog links me, I will know. I actually have no problems with strangers linking me, after all, this is the Internet. Take away all the links, you lose the meaning of its name. What i really cannot stand is ppl whom i noe, friends or acquaintances reading my blog and not letting me know.

I think here I need to distinguish between friends and other bloggers. I quote Mr Brown or some other famous blogger from time to time, but yea I dun indicate to them. I am not the only person doing that, they know alot of ppl do that. I don’t talk about stuff that is linked to my private interaction with them, which in the case of me and famous bloggers, it doesnt happen.

I try as much as i can to indicate to my frens that i’m reading their blogs. It could be a boliao thoughtful comment on one of the posts, or a tag on the chatboard. It could even be over msn or in person and i say to that person, “how’s the problem that u mentioned on ur blog? solved?” or “wah u sibeh scandalous leh..” So i really dun like it when ppl read my blog, and keep quiet still nvm. Go back to their own blogs n comment about it. Lucky they never use my name, but then it becomes very obvious who they are talking about when they mentioned the same modules that i’m taking, or jc seniors who work as reporters. You know who you are. O yah, good for you that ur grp of male friends when chatting wun eventually drift to sex or army. Not so perverts like us i guess. I talk too much cock, RH mosaics too much stuff, CK is obviously full of rubbish too. I guess that’s just us, young, full-blooded males who are just lao tiko.

Of course u can ignore this post and continue to voyeur ard, and mention things that i said here on ur blog while censornig the obvious details. It is well within your right as a web-citizen. But ah, since i know you as a person, I hope to get that basic respect. Just tag/comment/tell me in person, no hard feelings. No need to force u to delete posts. They are not offensive or incriminating or anything, in fact to put it in another way, i appreciate that someone is reading my posts and reporting/commenting on them. Just tell me, thanks…

Off The New Paper Primary school kids pull dangerous prank

On 11 March about 4:30pm, my son was riding his motorbike into the carpark of Block 216 in Bukit Batok when he saw a group of kids from the neighbourhood primary school crowding aropund a lamp post.

He slowed down and was making a right turn when he felt a sudden tug on his neck followed by a sharp pain.

Seeing this, the kids ran away. My son then realised that they had, as a prank, stretched a string across the carpark access.

I’m appalled by the incident. The kids may think it was harmless mischief but the string coould have cut deeper had my son not applied his brakes immediately.

I worry if these students will play even more dangerous pranks in the future.

I thought of reporting the incident to the police but decided to give school a chance to put things straight.

Seriously what are we teaching the kids these days?

Wiki of the Day: a-ha

Posted at 01:15.59 and filed under Visual Orgy, Wiki of the Day

Check out the mtv, circa 1986

a-ha is a Norwegian band who were most popular in the UK and the USA during the 1980s, but continued to be globally successful in the 1990s and 2000s. The trio, composed of lead vocalist Morten Harket, guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy (known as Pål Waaktaar until 1991) and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, formed in 1983 and left Norway for London in order to make a career in the music business. The origin of the name a-ha comes from the title of an early song. After checking dictionaries in several languages, they found out that “a-ha” was an international way of expressing recognition, with positive connotations. It was short, easy to say and unusual.

Sales (of Take on Me)were aided in the US by a music video on MTV that mimicked the climactic scene from the Ken Russell film Altered States. The video used a sketchy animation / live action combination called “Rotoscoping” (in which the video is first shot on normal video, then each frame is hand-traced over to give the animated effect) that tells a fantasy thriller story to the song. a-ha was also nominated for Best Video for “Take On Me” at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1986.

It’s finally here, well almost.. come wednesday, i would have gone for my last lessons in nus as an undergrad. Provided that i wake up on time, i would be going for a qm2 tut and econs lect. Then again, i think tml would be more interesting? last physics lecture, qm2. Assuming that i can wake up on time tml, it’s gonna be a bittersweet experience. Less than 3 yrs after the 1st pc1141 lecture in lt 25, last lect would be next door in lt24.

For all my complaints, i’m probably gonna leave with a heavy heart. For all the admin shit, and the cmi professors, there are classmates and professors who have made this journey easier to bear.. ;)

Bookworm Short Stories

Bookworm Short Stories

I was slacking at Pacific Coffee @ marina yesterday, they had this shelf of donated books which are mainly children\’s stuff, like enid blyton, Beano Annual, and about 10 bookworm books.

I could still remember the day when bookworm came to pei hwa when i was primary one to promote their books. If u subscribe, u would get 2 books a month - 1 bookworm short stories and another non-fiction book of theirs. The best part, @ least it seemed that way back then was that if u subscribe for 1 yr, u get a bookworm club membership that comes with a gold membership card that also works as discount card in many places.

I read bookworm throughout my primary sch days, got so bad that i would wait for the day when they send me the books each mth, and promptly finish both of them within an hour. Wait 30 days for 1 hr of enjoyment. 6 years of bookworm, more than 60 short stories books and roughly the same number of non-fiction books.. Is this hooked or wat?

Large roll of bubble wrap!

If you have not played with this as a kid, then i seriously think u’re damn sad lah..it’s my fav thing when my parents buy something of value, like electrical devices, or some fragile stuff. Then mama would give that sheet to me..and i would keep on pop pop pop. I happy, parents happy too cos i’m quietly occupied for 30 mins…heh..

So today i went to the Singapore Youth Photographers’ Award-organised seminar at SPH News Centre on photojournalism organised by zaobao. The talk was pretty good, but yea lousy doorgift, can’t expect much since it’s a free event. It’s this photoframe from their children’s newspaper Thumbs-up. Totally ginna design, but all i can see is the bubble wrap ard it.

You can guess wat i’m doing now… ;)

Don’t ever fuck with RIAA

Found an interesting story off Slashdot

Run Over by the RIAA Don…t Tap the Glass By Cassi Hunt

Either since the day I visited my first aquarium or the day Goldie came into my family’s life, our parents have told us not to tap the glass of the fish tank. It’s cruel to Goldie — I understand and respect that. I mean, heck, I am a vegetarian. But would we have many qualms over a little water perturbation if Goldie were, say, a bloodthirsty shark? I’d knock on that glass to the near-cracking point. And in that spirit, I decided to call up my new friend at the RIAA negotiation hotline again. (Hereafter I’ll refer to her as Bowie, which means “yellow haired,” as I’m pretty sure that’s the case.)

Last time I spoke with Bowie, the conversation was pretty much over after she named $3750 as the settlement amount. (I haven’t actually agreed to settle yet.) So when I called her again, I asked — again — about how to negotiate that amount. I counted on the fact that self-important types wouldn’t be inclined to remember a lowly pirate like me. Bowie didn’t disappoint. She launched into her spiel about how the RIAA doesn’t negotiate settlements. I told her that it was too much to ask for thousands of dollars from a college student who only makes just enough from term and summer employment to still come out a couple thousand in debt. : : : But as much as I tried to argue that I was in as unique a situation as someone with medical expenses, there was no getting through. Bowie even had the audacity to say, “In fact, the RIAA has been known to suggest that students drop out of college or go to community college in order to be able to afford settlements.”

Quick update

Posted at 12:38.32 and filed under Musings, Lyrics Galore!

Finally cleared the last deadline for this semester, all that is left to do is to mug for exams. Final one liaoz, kind of looking fwd to it…ending..so that taiwan trip can come fast..heh..

The state of affairs finally reached boiling pt and i let it all out last nite. The truth always hurts, but somehow I didnt wanna moderate my words in this case. Some things u just have to let it go, and later bear any unforeseen consequences.

I never saw myself as judgemental, i saw it as seeing something that kept on recurring, until it was plain to see. How can i not think that way by then?

The next Dreamz FM song, classic…
