Proof that army makes ppl stupid

I was rushing back to book in just now, and i got back to bunk, before realising that i left my locker key @ home.. So tonite i can’t brush my teeth, that seems to be the only problem until tml.

Until i remember that i had a spare key. Hopes were raised and I was happy for a split second.

It was only then when i remembered where i left the spare key..

IN THE LOCKER

Remember it’s the army that’s doing this to my mind, not myself consciously :P On a positive note, that means tml can book out go home for while..haha! Edit: Further proof of army-influenced stupidity, I did something that i shouldn’t have done. Hopes were raised, before crashing down again. Takes a fool to learn that a fool often comes crashing down…

End of 1st exercise

Posted at 11:08.27 and filed under Musings

Just got back from my 1st exercise, 11am now.. and bloody hell! we can only book out after 4pm.. So pretty much slacking ard the place now, surfing net, later go bunk sure sleep again..

Come to think of it, the exercise was pretty simple.. We headed out @ 5pm yest, put up a big tent in lim chu kang, complete with a camouflage net over the top and some simple defences. The problem was that most of us have not done all that for @ least 3 yrs, some close to 10 yrs. So it took abit of sweat before we got it done. After that, makan dinner and sleep, and sleep, and sleep..until 7am this morning.. packed up go back camp..

Yes this is how we use taxpayers’ money.

On the contrary, I think the purpose of the exercise is to just to refamiliarise ourselves with the command post, so that next wk’s exercise can be done sui4 sui4 n chope-chope..

Anyway this is the most fucked-up camp ever, infested by mosquitoes, doors that can’t close properly. Basically the whole place just looks damn rundown, being located in the middle of an industrial estate and next to a shipyard. God bless us if we coming back next yr.

1 more week to go…

The things that i will be doing in the next few days: 1. Shoot my 1st range with SAR21 2. Revise Bn Cell Ops 3. Conc Area training (alot of sai kang, confirmed) 4. One big exercise (time to start counting the dead, wounded and captured)

1 word to sum up England’s 2nd match..

Friday, 16 June 2006
Posted at 02:39.14 and filed under Musings

RUBBISH!

Perhaps Soccernet summarised the game nicely in the following way:

England secured their place in the knockout rounds of the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago - but the scoreline masks the ineptitude of the display. Late goals from Peter Crouch (84) and Steven Gerrard (90) finally did for the Caribbean nation. Wayne Rooney made his return from injury but lacked sharpness.

And it’s painful to watch Gerrard play in a holding role, which he is of cos capable of, but not the best that you can get out of him. One just has to look back a year ago in the Champions League Final when Liverpool trailed AC Milan 0-3 at half time. Gerrard was shackled in the same position and was unable to contribute to the attack. 2nd half, Benitez switched him to play behind the strikers and what a transformation. Gerrard in his current position for england, is like a ferrari trapped in a traffic jam, and having to watch Lampard waste chance after chance would be painful.

So what, even if qualify for last 16?

Round 1 of the grp stages of world cup 2006 has been completed, and i must say that this is a tournament that is favouring the favourites so far, in the sense that there hasn’t been any major cock ups by the A teams…

The tournament started with a dud match, Germany 4-2 Costa Rica. High-scoring match still can call dud match. It is good value for spectators who want to see goals, above all. It is bad value from a pure footballing sense as we saw 2 teams that put so much emphasis on attacking that they forgot to defend. I guess that is the problem when u have a former striker as coach. Attack attack attack, we score more goals than you can liaoz.

Seriously even after last nite’s game when Germany beat Poland by a solitary goal in injury time, I’m still picky enough to say that the Germans are far from being among the best teams in the tournament so far. Poland should have been despatched with greater ease, what more they were playing with 10 men. Ballack has been a total waste of time, deciding to sit back in midfield n taking up the appointment of an armchair general, instead of surging fwd to lead from the front which we are so familiar with..

Another side that has disappointed with all the pre-tournament hype is England 赢个懒. As usual they come into the tournament feeling like favourites, simply cos they sorta of invented football, they won the world cup in 1966, they suffered the Hand of God (or Maradona) in 1986, they have been knocked out by Germany on penalties in 1990. It’s payback time. Every world cup, the english press would say they bring their best squad ever, and every world cup, the so-called best squad bombs out. 1-0 over Paraguay and want to win world cup? Less chance than Singapore’s Goal 2010.

Netherlands was abit disappointing, being too dependent on Robben. Interesting reports have been filtering out from the Dutch camp that there is infighting within the players (what is a tournament w/o the Dutch players quarreling?), with van Persie claiming that Robben is way too selfish. I’m hoping that they improve and that van Nistelrooy can start scoring goals.

France, as usual. Condemned.

The top sides that really impressed me so far are Italy, Argentina, and Czech Republic. Italy played Ghana and won 2-0 in a performance that was really standard for them. Score 1 goal, close shop and play on counterattack. Everything starts from a strong defence for them, and i think it would be very effective against lower-ranked opponents. The only problem is that Italy cannot afford to concede 1st, cos by doing so, they effectively lose their heads and dunno wat to do. Their new strike pairing of Gilardino and Toni looks good, fast n powerful. They have enuff power on the bench, Iaquinta and Inzaghi (offside king). I can never understand Italian coaches, why they always like to play Totti, useless prick.

Argentina, effective football. Let the ball do the work, instead of running ard like headless chickens like the Ivory Coast players. Unfortunately, in the real world, passion and spirit are never enough to win you games. You have to attack your opponents’ weaknesses, and Argentina did that by playing sweet passes that cut into the heart of the Ivorians’ defence.

Czech, ’nuff said about them. Their midfielders are good enuff to win the games for them. Rosicky has been the find of the tournament so far, with his hard-running, passing and of cos his long range boomers. The team is damn lucky that Nedved came out of retirement, and together with Poborsky, Czech has arguably the best midfield in the tournament.

Brazil, folly in playing 4-2-2-2? We shall see how long they can carry on like this, and when would Ronaldo (Ah Bui) repay the faith the coach has in him.

Taiwan Adventures Day 8 Taipei 101 (again!) and Pinghsi 天灯

This is a daily chronicle of my trip to Taiwan from 9th to 24th May 2006 with Ronghua and partially Boon Liang. I am trying to blog about all 15 days, so it takes time..sorry.. If you wanna read all that have been posted, pls click on Taiwan Adventure category here, or on the left sidebar. ;)

Warning: Pic n vid intensive post

It was only the nite before when BL revealed to us that on his army training trip a few yrs back, he had seen much of Taipei and he only wanted to see Taipei 101 before going out of taipei. And we happily assumed that he’s not seen taipei. So effectively we have wasted 2 days in taipei. Day 8 hence called for a major revamp in plans, more on that later.

The sky was almost as overcast as the previous day but we decided to take our chance with Taipei 101. Luckily this time we were able to see the top of the building. NT$320 for the tickets, and we were all set to go up to the 89th floor (382 metres).

Future plans

Posted at 04:06.15 and filed under Musings

Just when i thought that I’m set for life with MOE, some doubts entered my mind. It’s not comforting to know that MOE has marked me for my slipped disk, which has since become a degenerated disk, ie it’s permanent and hardened. So the chances of it becoming aggravated is very little now. I went for their checkup and the letter from MOE stated that i would be employed with a A95 condition. That is i cannot take MC for medical problems related to my back. Army marked me as pes C, MOE marked me as A95.

Incidentally i chanced upon a job opening at Republic Poly’s Cultural Centre as part of their FOH team. Without thinking for long, i sent in my application for it. A chance to do FOH management has been something that has been on the back of my mind for sometime. So i guess this is a good opportunity if i do get it. The only problem is that they would take 1-2 mths to process, and i have to start MOE in late jul. Knowing myself, i wouldn’t want to be caught in no-man’s land and i would start the moe job if i can’t confirm RP by then. If RP offer comes after i start MOE, i would seriousl y consider dropping MOE even if it means that there is no way back, no way to come back into teaching next time.

Welcome to the real world..

Taiwan Adventures Day 7 Taipei 101 and Huaxi Street

The bad thing about not having to rush to travel every morning is that you totally have no urgency to wake up early. No more early bird catching the worm, more of lazy bird waiting for hot sun to dry the worms. So we probably left the hostel at about 10am to start on the most impt mission of the day, going Taipei 101 looking for money-changer. By now, me n RH have more or less exhausted our original S$500 and were desperate for a money changer. In Taipei no cash still alright, you can still swipe n swipe. Out of Taipei and into small towns, it’s crucial to have cash on hand.

The thing about Taiwan is that probably due to currency controls, you can only change money at banks. No such thing as going to the nearest indian moneychanger like we are so used to in sg. Walking 1 street away to a Japanese bank’s branch, we got our 1st rejection of the day. They don’t take SGD, and instead directed us to a Bank of Taiwan’s branch 3 streets away. Eschewing the offer, we decided to make our way to Taipei 101 where it’s a financial hub and banks are aplenty. Taipei bank branches, most of them would deploy a junior staff member to stand at the waiting area to answer queries that ppl have, including foreigners like us. She would usually be somewhat attractive and wear this pair of white satin gloves. (more…)

Imageshack just screwed me, my images are like dead..shit…

Anyway, it’s the end of busy busy week, 6 days ushering @ indoor stad, and 1 at ucc… starting to do more senior usher duties @ indoor, which is a very good thing mostly.. Increased responsibility and pay. The only bad side so far is hearing too much from 1 person, and realising that although he might be a very capable and experienced usher @ indoor stad, he is definitely not an ez person to work with…

So back in Taipei, means time for me and ronghua to recharge. By now the full itinerary was more or less settled. First 5 days, then come back Taipei for another 4-5 days, before whacking the southern region. Staying in Taipei for so long has a big advantage, we dun need every morning rush to take long dist bus or train. Don’t need to every night pack bag. And for once, we can have decent breakfast like this, instead of pack n go.

The World Cup is the world’s biggest event for the world’s most popular sport. When your team wins, you can feel great; when your team loses, you can feel terrible. It’s what makes soccer exciting — some years your team does great, other years it may be a real struggle. If soccer is your source of happiness, then your life can go up and down. There is just one source of peace and joy that doesn’t change — and that is God. Having a personal relationship with God can give you true peace no matter what happens on the soccer field. Here are 4 key steps you can take to begin a personal relationship with God.

Soccer fans who are interested in devouring every single bit of world cup news, crap or truth (this falls into the former) can forget bout reading on… this article makes no further mention of world cup or soccer.

Alishan has 4 wonders: The alpine railway, sunrise, “云海” and pine forest. “云海” occurs in autumn when the heavy cloud cover gets blown in by the winds and they roll, appearing to be like sea waves…hence 云海.. Obviously now not the rite season to see..

Every visitor to Alishan must see the sunrise, it is famous throughout Taiwan. There are 2 places to see from, one is nearby but not guaranteed to have a good sunrise. We paid a tour guide NT300 each to bring us over to Yushan National Park for the sunrise. (more…)

Taiwan Adventures Day 4: Alishan Adventures

After deciding not to purchase tickets for the famous train ride up to Alishan as it would only reach at 4pm, we decided to take a 7am bus up Alishan instead which costs NT200 each. However we were waylaid at the bus station by this uncle who offered to take us up for the same price, and that he would refund the bus ticket for us. After the Sun Moon Lake experience, we were slightly sceptical but the worst thing he could do to us is to drive us to some isolated expensive hotel. So we decided to go for it. Before we could board, we were stopped by a lady who offered us accomodation at Alishan for NT1000 which we took lah, save trouble of finding room.

The uncle stopped midway up the mountain at a teahouse ran by his friend. Had great oolong tea to wake us up for the rest of the day…

Taiwan Adventures Day 3: 九族文化村 and Chiahyi

I must say that we were pretty jaded by Sun Moon Lake, and continuing the cheapo fashion, we decided not to pay NT600 each for the cab tour ard the lake as they weren’t particularly impressive.

So a visit to 九族文化村, or Formosa Aboriginal Village nearby ensued. The place, is a pretty grand one in terms of its size. It has a European garden that is about the size of 2 football fields, a relatively big pine garden and a pretty decent amusement park with ok rides. There was of course the main attraction, display villages of the 9 aboriginal tribes in Taiwan. Pretty cheesy i must say, but the place proved to be good one-stop station to get all the info about all 9 tribes, w/o having to travel to remote villages.
