Night cycling

Went night cycling with some friends and their friends, altogether 9 of us. At the end of it, i think me n pangster felt kind of unsatisfied, for even with his knee it was a no-kick ride. Set off just before 11pm and came back to ecp @ 6.45am, almost 8 hours yet the mileage was very low. ECP to Changi Coast Rd, rounded airport to Changi Village, then to bedok and kallang, before coming back to ECP. In a way, it’s an inexperienced group, with some inexperienced cyclists and inexperienced group cyclists. I tend to be more kiasu when dealing with a cycling or motorbike touring group, and the 1st rule of leading a noobie team is that everyone must keep close, if not sure got problems come out. Like someone nearly gettign hit by a van, and having to navigate thru a few bz roads with the use of marshals

Of cos there are the nice parts, meeting up and talking with buddies. And the taking of some, imho, pretty nice pictures ;)

I was crossing the road just now behind Teachers’ Network, when i saw this group of teachers who were on course, going back to the campus after lunch. The strange thing was that there’s a member among them who is visually handicapped, needs a guidestick and all.

Now her friends were trying to guide her across the 2-lane-per-side road, and get this, they were attempting to bring her across the road by jaywalking less than 50m away from a traffic light. I really have no idea wtf are they thinking, those colleagues of hers. Convenience perhaps, but to bring a lady who has problems seeing to cross the road not just illegally but dangerously.

Friends? sure not?

Taiwan Adventures Day 12: Kenting to Hualien

Posted at 00:32.07 and filed under Taiwan Adventure

This is a daily chronicle of my trip to Taiwan from 9th to 24th May 2006 with Ronghua and partially Boon Liang. I am trying to blog about all 15 days, so it takes time..sorry.. If you wanna read all that have been posted, pls click on Taiwan Adventure category here, or on the left sidebar. ;)

Day 12 proved to be a rather sombre day for me, after all the fun and action on the previous day. Ronghua suggested going to the beach at Nanwan in the morning with his friend and the rest of them, but i decided to pass on it. My friend’s wake was leaving at that very moment in Singapore and there was no mood to have fun. Instead I took the time to sit at the lobby, watch some tv, walk ard the town for a while and basically mope. Managed to top up my supply of motion sickness medicine at the local pharmacy, which i found pretty dodgy. An old man was selling all the drugs, he can’t speak english. So if u give him the name of a medicine in english, good luck to you. He sells contact lenses w/o prescription or checking as well. You can just walk in and buy them off the shelf, piece by piece if u want.

The last pic of Kenting was that of the hotel boss’ grand daughter

May she not become like her grandpa..grr!

We left Kenting at 1pm, heading back to Kaohsiung. Took the budget bus again, but this time I was more worried for our safety, and with good reason probably to do so. In taiwan, it’s very common to see ppl, esp. transport workers chewing betel nuts and smoking in order to keep themselves alert on the road. However most ppl buy betel nuts in pre-packaged forms, where the inedible core has been removed, the betel leaf already coated with slaked lime and wrapped around the accacia nut. Some ppl pref to DIY, like our bus driver. Every traffic junction, he would use the long nail on his little finger to remove the core, then another hand grab the leaf and wrap it ard before chewing. And he would proceed to spit it into a metal mug. Repeat the process for all 3 hrs of the journey.

So we got to Kaohsiung @ 4.30pm and went to the train station to find out what time’s the next train to Hualien 花莲. 4.45 for the express and direct train, arriving at 9.30pm(!!). However there were no seats avail. (!!!!) The next train is the 2nd class one, where we would have to take to Tainan 台南 and wait 1 hr for another train to take us to Hualien, and arrive at 1am(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Basically we were stuck, and the ticketing staff, this middle-aged guy offered us another option. There weren’t seats avail for the whole journey to Hualien, but the way to get around this is by sitting together at a pair of seats for the 1st hour, shifting to separate seats for the next 1.5 hrs to Tainan, before sitting together for the final 2 hours. Troublesome, but we didnt have a choice, and time. By the time we settled the tickets, 3 pairs of them, we were running to the platform with our backpacks. Wrong time to be in bloody big station, with at least 11 railroads in the station..

The journey to Hualien was along the southern loop of the rail network. Basically it takes a path of the letter J, starting from the tail. You round the island’s southen tip, before heading northwards up to the middle of the island. I dunno y i never took any pictures, now then start to regret. I saw the sea on my right side for about 1 hour, then the train turns to the west, and u can just spot the Kenting coastline in the distance. The coastline disappears after a while as the train cuts through the mountain range in a long series of tunnels, and after 1 hour, the train turns north and heads to Tainan and the Pacific’s on your right now. It rained all the way, I think that was why i never took pics.

We got to Hualien at 9.45pm and went to the nearest hotel. Bargained for NT$800, instead of 1000, and the hotel was totally deserted, like the corridor lights were semi-working… the level lobby was pretty dim in terms of lighting, and this hotel has the habit of leaving unoccupied rooms open. Weird, and freaky if u ask me. We found a decent place to eat, and realised that the speciality good from Hualien was muah chee! A visit to an internet cafe where we choked on 2nd hand cigarette smoke and came out smelling like tobacco rounded up the day of extensive travelling.

Taiwan Adventures Day 11: Kenting

This is a daily chronicle of my trip to Taiwan from 9th to 24th May 2006 with Ronghua and partially Boon Liang. I am trying to blog about all 15 days, so it takes time..sorry.. If you wanna read all that have been posted, pls click on Taiwan Adventure category here, or on the left sidebar. ;)

This morning’s happenings reminded us that we were in a tourist trap and all the niceness of the old hotel owner was thrown out of the window. Previously the deal was that for NT$1000, we would get the room and also MacDonalds breakfast, which for 2 persons is probably worth about NT$150. The scooter rental costs NT$400 for 24 hrs. So the prev day, we checked into the room at 3pm, and took over the scooter at about 4.30pm. So we should have the bike till 4.30pm today at least.

Going down to the lobby at 8am, the 1st thing he asked us, “你们今天还要住吗?”. So we said yes, and he immediately demanded that we pay him. I asked about the macs breakfast and guess his reply..

“你们今天就自己去吃吧。。” 1st stunt of the day, until we reminded him of the agreement before he grudgingly gave us 2 vouchers for the nearby macs. I felt that that we were being shortchanged cos i tot it would be delivered breakfast, but i decided not to kick up a fuss. The voucher turned out to be for a mcmuffin only.

Coming back to the hotel later, he wanted us to return the bike @ noon, claiming that he had guests who wanted to use it. This time me n ronghua really dulan, said that we die die wun return before 4pm. Insisting on us returning before the time would mean that we would check out immediately. Actually it was a small gamble that we took, knowing that it’s a friday and rooms might be hard to find. However with us being so mobile, we can fuck care Kenting and go somewhere else instead. The old man blinked and said we could return the scooter by 4pm, and we finally paid the room rate for 1 more night.

The plan was to explore as much of the southern tip as possible and we headed due east, skipping the lighthouse at Erluanbi 鹅卵鼻 since it costs NT$40 each and we have both been there. Eventually we rounded the southeastern tip of Taiwan and came to Fengchuisha 风吹砂 where we stopped for a while. The place supposedly experiences very strong winds from time to time that shapes the sand on the coast into dunes.

Accidentally in Love

Posted at 00:13.50 and filed under Lyrics Galore!, Visual Orgy

Havn’t posted lyrics for sometime.. so today throwing in the MTV as well…

“Accidentally In Love”
by Counting Crows

So she said what’s the problem baby
What’s the problem I don’t know
Well maybe I’m in love (love)
Think about it every time
I think about it
Can’t stop thinking ’bout it

How much longer will it take to cure this
Just to cure it cause I can’t ignore it if it’s love (love)
Makes me wanna turn around and face me but I don’t know nothing ’bout love

Come on, come on
Turn a little faster
Come on, come on
The world will follow after
Come on, come on
Cause everybody’s after love

So I said I’m a snowball running
Running down into the spring that’s coming all this love
Melting under blue skies
Belting out sunlight
Shimmering love

Well baby I surrender
To the strawberry ice cream
Never ever end of all this love
Well I didn’t mean to do it
But there’s no escaping your love

These lines of lightning
Mean we’re never alone,
Never alone, no, no

Come on, Come on
Move a little closer
Come on, Come on
I want to hear you whisper
Come on, Come on
Settle down inside my love

Come on, come on
Jump a little higher
Come on, come on
If you feel a little lighter
Come on, come on
We were once
Upon a time in love

We’re accidentally in love
Accidentally in love [x7]

Accidentally

I’m In Love, I’m in Love,
I’m in Love, I’m in Love,
I’m in Love, I’m in Love,
Accidentally [x2]

Come on, come on
Spin a little tighter
Come on, come on
And the world’s a little brighter
Come on, come on
Just get yourself inside her

Love …I’m in love

Taiwan Adventures Day 10: Kenting

Sunday, 16 July 2006
Posted at 16:05.07 and filed under Visual Orgy, Taiwan Adventure

This is a daily chronicle of my trip to Taiwan from 9th to 24th May 2006 with Ronghua and partially Boon Liang. I am trying to blog about all 15 days, so it takes time..sorry.. If you wanna read all that have been posted, pls click on Taiwan Adventure category here, or on the left sidebar. ;)

And so we were supposed to wake up by 8am, explore the area to the west of Tainan before coming back by lunch and making our way down to Kenting right at the southernmost tip of Taiwan.

Key phrase: Supposed to

Sleeping in a room that has no windows after a totally boring evening resulted in us sleeping till noon. Yes, wasted half a day. Hurriedly stuffed things back into our packs before going over to the train station to catch the next train to Kaohsiung, which took about an hour or so. We decided to give the city a miss since both of us have been here before and there’s nothing extraordinary here seriously. The bus ride to Kenting cost us like NT$350 each, cheapo us took the 3 hr bus ride as opposed to the 2 hr one since we could save almost NT$100.

Reaching Kenting at about 3pm, we stopped for lunch @ KFC before emerging out onto the main street to get pestered by hotel operators, before eventually settling for a hotel with a fanciful name 旅游之家, ran by this old man. He added in a scooter rental for 24 hrs, and we got a slight discount.

There is a hot spring in the town of Sichongxi 四重溪, 15km away from Kenting and we went to find it. Riding is 2nd nature to me but still it took abit of time getting used to riding on the wrong side of the road, toodling along @ an average speed of 60km/h (Upslopes would mean 30km/h while downslopes meant 90km/h). Of course i have to give ronghua a shock by doing a tight turn which nearly resulted in the 2nd accident of my riding career..but yea close shave..

The cheapo streak resulted in us skipping the hot spring resort and heading straight to the FOC public bathhouse..
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

No pics inside obviously, there were 2 separate sections, one for guys and the other for ladies, and both are nude baths. There is however no incentive to sneak into the the ladies section after we realised that most of the ppl coming here are the villagers who use this place to bathe. The men’s section had a lot of old men and young kids, and you’re supposed to shower @ the side 1st, scrubbing urself clean before going into the bath. Ronghua and me obviously camed unprepared w/o showering accessories, so we just tried our best to make ourselves clean (read: wayang). The water was hot, but not excessively and it was damn shiok. We didn’t stay for long, after becoming lightheaded after 20 mins and not wanting to ride so long in the dark.

Dinner was beef noodles at this huge restaurant that had more empty seats than filled ones, probably owing to the fact that it was a Thursday night after all. Pretty good stuff..
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I always like the effect of long exposure shots, and i placed my camera on the concrete wall along the coast at Nanwan 南湾 when we stopped for a while after dinner to take in abit of the breeze.

You can make out the domes of the nuclear power plant across the bay

The main street of Kenting transformed into a night market with many games stalls, including mini pachinko machines for kids, talk about starting from young. There was of course the games arcade which was 90% filled with basketball machines and toy-grabbing machines, the current rage all over taiwan.

My cheong valedictorian speech

Posted at 13:44.36 and filed under aNUS, Musings

“Good morning Dean, professors (including the smirk face 阿宝, probably counting his mahjong winnings while sitting on stage). Not forgetting family and friends who have managed to drag themselves here on a Sunday morning after watching Germany knock the socks off Portugal at 3am last night, thank you for attending this commencement ceremony.

The 3-year journey in NUS is coming to an end for me and my friends. What can i say? It has been a journey of ups and downs, of pure happiness and outright disgust. I still ask myself sometimes when i’m feeling low: Should I have just stayed at NTU Computer Engineering?

In a way, I guess I got a bad start to NUS when the admin claimed that I didn’t submit my assorted forms, and they called me when I was at my firing range in army. I told them that i did, and even if there’s any problem, i cannot be on the phone when i’m at the range. The lady obviously didn’t believe me, until i placed the phone next to my M16 and fired away at Figures 12 and 15. Later the forms were found, probably due to the encouragement from my wife.

God knows what made me sign up for orientation camps, probably from missing the so-called “fun” from jc orientation. Probably also due to the fact that there are vegetables to be seen. The initial unity with my sci camp OG didn’t last for long, in fact not even till the last day of the camp. Different perspectives in lives, different ideas of fun resulted in the eventual split, which isnt that big a loss come to think of it.

I think a large part of my undergraduate days was spent indulging in the Indian Affair. An initial YEP to Bangalore in Dec 2003 was the initial date, before arrangements were made for a short date in June 2004 to check out a new site where I eventually led a team to visit in Dec 2004 for 2 days. The trips resulted in friendships that were definitely closer than the surface friendships that were established during orientation camps. Clubbing in DXO during science camp vs drinking indian beer directly from big bottles on the rooftop of our houses, take your pick. I chose the latter.

The sacrifices made for the 2004 trip stretched across a huge front. Less time with family and other friends, less time for academic endeavours etc. The latter was a killer when i flunked my Quantum Mechanics 1 module in Sem 1 2004. No doubt that Prof Dagomir made it a very tough module, and no less than 6 persons failed the module, but it was still a matter of putting in enough time and effort to understand the content and attempt to do better. I failed to do so in the 1st instance, and paid the penalty for it. 2nd time round, I think we managed to put in much more effort for the module and passed it. To me, it was the most impt module that i have taken in NUS, not that it taught me ALOT of things or I managed to ace it. It taught me how impt it is to put in effort and how I would be rewarded for sufficient effort put in. It threw me off the 1st time round, only for me, teck and kenny to come back much stronger.

In essence, alot of the physics modules are like this. Without sufficient effort, it is definitely possible to flunk a module. We struggled thru alot of stuff together, yet we managed to have fun in many areas, especially in the lab. I can still vividly remember our 1st lab session in year 1, which was supposed to be from 2pm to 5pm. We eventually got chased out of the lab at 6.45pm even though we could not finish the data collection, and hence kickstarted our career in data-creation. The 2nd lab next week involved heating water up to boiling point in a long and big glass tube, before tracking its cooldown to close to melting point. Dropping from 100deg to room temperature was pretty fast, and in order to cool it further, we had to put ice into the surrounding water bath, which was very inefficient. Learning from the prev. week’s experience, we put crushed ice between a folded piece of cloth and used that to rub up and down the glass tube.

Year 2, our Commanding Officer, LTC Yilin led us in starting the lab like 1.5 months before the start of semester. Year 2 lab eventually became the gathering place of all the yr 2 physics majors, with myself a regular occupier of the new couch where u often see me in a horizontal position.

Year 3 lab was stricter but we still got our way somehow, despite the constant naggings by Prof Tok who said that we weren’t professional enuff when we wore berms to lab, traded and played mp3s, ate ice kacang in lab (Joe took the lead from us and assumed that we could eat in lab, and he brought in a full meal, only to kena fucked).

Of course the final test of a physics degree lies in QM2 which is a die-die-oso-must-pass module by Prof Englert. It’s fucking tough, not to mention handwritten notes that had 200 odd pages. I think everyone steeled up for this module, die die oso must get D at least, if not stay in nus for another yr. No honour still not enuff, still must stay 1 more yr to get a pass or merit. The good thing is that englert rewards effort as well: as long as he knows that u have made a good attempt to understand the syllabus, he most probably wun fail you. We all passed ;)

My fellow ushers at UCC deserve a special mention as well, for it is working at this hall which helped me to discover the people skills that i have when handling patrons. These guys have brought so much fun and laughter into my life over the past 2 years, and i hope that i have certainly done the same for them..

A university education, I realised is not just about fighting for that piece of paper which is only issued once and can never be replaced. It is about the ppl whom u fight on the same front with, the fellow warriors whom you battled together in order to pass a stupid module. Results are seen in the form of a single alphabetical letter with a positive or negative sign, but one should never let them dictate his or her life. The journey is more impt than the end result, for it is where we pick up the learning points and try to improve ourselves in the next journey. I hereby leave you with 2 quotes from one of the forefathers of physics, Sir Issac Newton and wish you all well for the remainder of your life’s journey:

If I have seen further it is by standing on ye shoulders of Giants.
I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.

NUS doesn’t misuse your $$$

And so the cat’s out of the bag, the following 2 ads cost S$490,000 to produce and air..

Issues churning at NUS Business School Derrick A Paulo derrick@newstoday.com.sg

REMEMBER the recent National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School television commercial which claimed that the school is “preferred around the world by tomorrow’s elite” and that Singapore boys are “way too cute”?

It is still making waves — not for the response it drew but for the alleged hurry in which it was commissioned.

The advertisement cost about $490,000 to push out and the question now is whether the tender of competition for it was waived without following university procedures.

Sources say the school’s office of finance and administration initially refused to sign an approval of payment, as there was no issuance of purchase order for the advertisement, and the office was said to have known of the procurement only after the shoot had been commissioned.

Still, the ad agency was under a period contract with the school, and the advertisement and the funding for it — which came from profits from the school’s executive education programmes — were authorised by NUS Business School dean Chris Earley.

In two emails to staff, he wrote: “I think now is the time for us to proceed and take the gamble on it. It’s a lot of money but I anticipate this won’t be an issue for us.

“Given the time urgency, I think we just need to proceed and then I can apologise later for mistakes … With regard to procurement procedures, we just need to go ahead on my authorisation and I’ll write a note explaining why we had to act as quickly as we did.”

When contacted by Today, Prof Earley said: “All I did is I approved in-principle the ad itself … As the dean, I’m not actually responsible or aware of the operational details.

“We needed to get the ads out very quickly in time for the final push for enrolments to the BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration programme) … and the good news is our enrolments are at record levels.”

The enrolments for this year closed on June 5. The ad first aired on May 21.

How procedures for the ad were handled is now part of a wider internal investigation by NUS into corporate governance issues at its Business School.

What is 490K however, when the admin makes savings in the following ways?

We reuse all the balloons here, or at least ppl are told that these balloons are reused. Bet the ushers have to pick all of them out, keep the properly inflated ones, and reblow the half-fucked ones. Save rubber, and save money and the world at the same time.

The Chosen One of NUS allows his PA to bring his fav hot coffee in styrofoam cups into a hall that prohibits other patrons to bring in food and drinks. The only reason i can think of to explain this, so that he can drink it while it’s hot, if not cold liaoz = waste money.

Reception food at ceremonies are never thrown away, we ship them to malaysia to feed cows and pigs..

Working at NUS Commencement

Posted at 11:33.19 and filed under Ushering, aNUS, Visual Orgy

Didn’t do so many slots like last yr, opted out for 3 of them and didn’t get another. Hence was left with 17 slots. Somehow i found this year being more stressful than last yr, even though i did all 21 in 2005. A reason could be that alot of the procedures were never set properly and there were so many changes.

Last year, everyone was tired but @ least morale was at a decent level. Some ppl were around and they certainly made things more fun. Larry was the chief raider of reception food, and there was never a need to worry about getting ourselves some decent food. This year, all i can say is that the tiredness is still there, but my morale has decided to become a mole and tunnel underground. I think commencement more or less confirmed that we are the lowest lifeform at the venue, when even cleaners take food before us. Not say that the food is very good or what, but @ least give us that bit of welfare.

Welfare came in the form of catered meals provided by the new cafe called Nicole’s. Horrendous. Absolutely horrendous. Everyday 2 lousy mixed-veg rice 菜饭 caused me to usually eat whatever reception food that is available or ride out to fong seng or YIH to buy decent makan.

Another thing that i learnt is NAVY - Never Always Volunteer Yourself. Me and a few other ppl felt that there is no longer any incentive to take initiative there, and in fact, there could be some disincentives. Talking to a patron 5m from my assigned position resulted in an order to return to position, that was given to me when i was still talking to the patron. Now anything vaguely not sure, check with TL. In a way, it takes the load off me, I dun have to answer for things, if that’s the aim of it.

There are of course things that we can be truely proud of. Other than battling the tiredness and the low morale, commencement always served as a chance for different teams’ ushers to get to know one another better. I certainly got to know a few ppl better, and their working styles as well, though there wouldn’t be many chances to work with the ppl again.

Of cos being stationed at the vip door sometimes means that I can be the 1st to congratulate my friends right after they get off stage…heh…

Overall, it was still an amazing experience, where us ushers are exposed to a stressed and tiring environment for 8 days. And most of us emerge stronger and more united after the experience..

Shutting down Brown’s Column

Monday, 10 July 2006
Posted at 00:13.00 and filed under Singapore

This comment by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan more or less confirmed the fact that superior forces were responsible for the shutdown of the Today newspaper column by Mr Brown.

“If you feel there is a problem with cost of living, say so, let’s collectively explore solutions. But don’t in the name of humour distort or aggravate on an emotional level. That sort of discourse does not generate solutions. It generates more heat than light.

“So we should put this in its proper context. If someone says something which we disagree with, we will say so. If someone says something which is unhelpful we have a right to say it is unhelpful. We have a right to remind everyone that at the end of the day, this is not a fight.

“We are in search of solutions and by working together and by engaging in an honest constructive dialogue we can do so and we want our newspapers to be a part of that process and also to be aware that, the mainstream media in particular. You are not an internet chat room.”

Problem is, would higher forces openly admit to doing that?

Commencement

Today is day 4 of commencement, so far only didnt work for this morning..and tml morning finally my turn. It is something that i’ve been hoping for to arrive soon, yet when it’s so close, there is a weird feeling. Have done i think 30 comm. ceremonies over 2 yrs, now finally my turn. Incidentally this is gonna be the 1st time that i’m part of the audience in UCC Hall.

Anyway this yr’s ceremonies have been less stressful for me? Less chances to do packing, need to blood the newbies. So that means more chances for me to do other positions, more relaxed. Last time doing commencement liaoz, dun need to chiong so much.

Wish me luck tml, that i dun fall when going up stage, or let my mortarboard drop when receiving my scroll.

And so it seems that because I’m either not a known donor to NUS, or they already gave up on asking me for donations, NUS have decided to try its luck with my dad. Luckily I saw the letter, it’s weird to see an NUS letter addressed neither to me nor my sis.. So i opened it up…

This speaking-to-my-dad policy makes me feel like a kid u noe, like i can’t afford to donate 100 bucks.. now i noe how the AOL victim felt like when the CSO asked to speak to his dad instead…

The Italian Job

Wednesday, 5 July 2006
Posted at 07:06.42 and filed under Musings

Was watching the italy-germany match @ clarke quay just now with the guys and boy oh boy, really exciting game and so typical italian. Of course the post-match entertainment at clarke quay was pretty good, though it could have gotten us all to go to cantonment complex in mata car…let’s not talk about that..

Anyway i have come up with a list…

How to qualify as a true blue Azzurri fan:

  1. It is the nature of my team to play boringly for most of the match, if not all.
  2. The star striker will be offside 9 out of 10 times.
  3. My team will spend most of the time camped in my own half.
  4. I shall not even be concerned unless the ball is the goal area.
  5. I shall not panic when the defender or keeper has to make crucial saves.
  6. I will not worry when the opposition has all the shots.
  7. I will only worry when the ball is in our net.
  8. My team’s players are divers, take it or leave it.
  9. But they dive so beautifully that other teams try to pirate from them.
  10. Victory is always in sight, patience is the key.

FORZA AZZURRI!

Smoking Ban

Tuesday, 4 July 2006
Posted at 01:48.01 and filed under Musings, Singapore

The new no-smoking rule for eating outlets just kicked in over the weekend, and man were they strict. An indoor outlet can allocated 10% of its tables to be smoking area, while outdoor outlets can have 20%. The ban was supposed to start on the stroke of midnight on 1st july, in the middle of the Germany-Argentina match, which would have just started its 2nd half. Apparently kopitiam owners were quick to ask patrons to stop smoking or shift back to the smoking zone (hereby knowned as yellow box, due to the yellow line demarcating the area). Not that the kopitiam owners really cared about the health and environmental repercussions, they were more concerned about their wallets, most of them. With the orh-kong starting from a few hundred dollars for failure to make known the rule for the 1st time, to the possible withdrawal of operating license.

I think, living my entire life in Singapore has made me sorta of numb to such blanket bans. I was upset as a kid when they banned chewing gum. A field trip to Malacca with the Boys Brigade back in primary 5 saw us snapping up so much gum at the 1st makan stop in johor. So much that we had to figure where to hide them in order to escape from the customs officers. Now i dun even buy gum whenever i go on my weekly trips to johor for petrol. Getting used to it is one thing, failing to understand the rationale for it is another.

Sometimes i cannot understand anti-smoking lobbyists. Singapore is small, makan places are small. However is it really small enuff to prevent you from shifting to another place to sit in a makan place if someone in the next table is smoking? I can understand if you are already sitting there, and a smoker comes to sit near u and start puffing away. I would be fucking pissed too, cos the smoker purposely chose to sit near me and smoke. The scenario becomes abit trickier when a non-smoker sits next to a smoker who at that point of time was not smoking, but lights up later. To me, there is nobody at fault here, yet the situation could possibly be settled easily through some negotiating between the 2 parties.

However what if a non-smoker chooses to sit next to a smoking patron? Does he have the right to ask the smoker to butt out? Does he have the moral authority to force the smoker to accede to his demand? The government seems to think so, with all the new laws coming up.

Smoking most definitely harms your health, that is something that we cannot deny. Citizens have to be advised about the dangers of smoking and the benefits of quitting. If advice doesnt work, then u have to take action to force them to stop. An outright ban on smoking wun work, plus that’s a big loss of tax revenue. So they chose the yellow box way of containing the smokers, make it damn troublesome for them to smoke. I wun be surprised next time buy cigarettes must register with IC 1st, like for pre-paid sim cards.

Of course one may try to use yellow paint and paint around one’s shoes, portable yellow box… best..

Leave u with something from the Ig Nobel Awards, which awarded somethign to 老李 back in 1994

PSYCHOLOGY
Lee Kuan Yew, former Prime Minister of Singapore, practitioner ofthe psychology of negative reinforcement, for his thirty-year study of the effects of punishing three million citizens of Singapore whenever they spat, chewed gum, or fed pigeons.

Taiwan Adventures Day 9 Tainan

Monday, 3 July 2006
Posted at 02:33.18 and filed under Taiwan Adventure

This is a daily chronicle of my trip to Taiwan from 9th to 24th May 2006 with Ronghua and partially Boon Liang. I am trying to blog about all 15 days, so it takes time..sorry.. If you wanna read all that have been posted, pls click on Taiwan Adventure category here, or on the left sidebar. ;)

Sorry this update took sometime coming, was in army and only had the time for short posts.

Warning: Picture Intensive!

Boon Liang was supposed to fly back today, leaving me n Ronghua to go down to Tainan in what can be called the 3rd and final segment of our trip. Staying in Taipei for past 4-5 days made me nuah, waking up like 8.20, when the bus is supposed to leave at 8.45. All thanks to my lazing-on-bed skill, RH’s inability to wake me up. So early morning already must mad scramble to bus station which was a comfortable 10 mins walk away, that wasn’t comfortable carrying a fully-loaded 55l pack and a daypack. Thankfully, we made it on time, even had time to go into the railway station bakery and pick up my fav sandwich..heh..

The bus down to Tainan was not as advanced as the one from Chiahyi, having 6 LCD screens only, but still having the individual sound console. The driver screened the animated version of 梁祝 The Butterfly Lovers which was pretty good. Ride took about 3 hrs plus, and we nearly got fleeced by the bus driver, who conveniently offloaded everyone in an area which was obviously a taxistand and nowhere near Tainan Railway Station. RH saw a taxi driver thanking the bus driver, nabeh.. (more…)

Back from army

and it’s been a pretty good time actually, come to think of it. Other than the chance to meet up with old pals and meet some new ppl, it was also a chance to get away from the civilian world for a while. Not that i really hate the civilian world or love them military one, but I always feel that having some variety in your life is good.

Of cos this time round we have a new boss, who was called up for his 1st ICT in almost 10 yrs. I’m in the manpower branch, so that makes him the unit’s manpower officer, or what we call S1. 2.5 yrs of NSF and clerking taught me many things, one of which is the selective respecting of ppl who have a higher rank than me (anything above CPL). By respect, i dun mean the one that i give to his rank, that is a must in a regimental environment. I’m more concerned whether the person is able to command real respect. S1 rates our performance, we rate his too. For me, my boss should either take good care of the men, or really know his stuff and makes sure we know our stuff. Best is both.

If the boss lacks the former, he can still command the branch and work can get done, even though morale may not be at the peak.

If the boss lacks the latter, he would need capable staff who are willing to work for him since he takes care of them.

If the boss lacks both, he can go fly kite liaoz. That’s my boss, who is scared to get arrowed, who is not worried to arrow us to do stupid things, who does not protect us from external arrows from irrelevant ppl.. 8 more ICTs with him, prepare to die liaoz..

On another note, we had a 2 very good evenings on wed n thurs, our last nights in ICT. Wed, after coming back from the exercise, immediately booked out go Jurong point for dinner, then West Coast Recreational Centre for pool and bowling. Thurs did the same thing. Now back sore, arms sore… shiok…
