I’m damn irritated by the photocopying service @ the national library reference section, the bugis one.. You tell me, which company ing singapore charges EIGHT BLOODY CB cents for self-service photocopying.. Not like the paper is 100gsm or they use quality toners.  Talk about having the conditions for a price-discriminating monopoly.. Cannot bring the books out, cannot loan home, only company offering the service.. dead liaoz lor.. no wonder can offer 3rd degree price discrimination.

knn, next time i come here to get materials i gonna bring my slim scanner along liaoz..

Two wheels only. Nothing more

Monday, 16 April 2007
Posted at 20:28.20 and filed under Two Wheels

I just realised that i’ve been riding for 4 years.  Can still remember 13 apr 2003 when I went to my fren’s place in hougang to collect my bike from him on a saturday night.  You can imagine my excitement to be able to own my 1st bike.  So I wrote home at 11pm, and realised that i left my bag at his place when i was checking the bike.  So rode back to hougang and back home later, clocking more than 40km on the 1st nite alone.

A few weeks later, i had my 1st and only accident.  Failed to anticipate a car slowing down in front of me just before wheelock place and ended up skidding into the back of the benz.  Nothing serious, just 100 bucks damage to my bike, 30 bucks to see sinseh for my bruised shin, and 2.7k in insurance claim from him.

One year later, i switched to my 1st suzuki bandit, the All Blacks one.  That ride brought me alot of thrills, and spills.  Imagine day 2 of collecting the bike, i dropped it while trying to make a u-turn.  Had to pick up the bike in front of the crowded bus stop.  This bike taught me a lot of things, how to handle heavy bikes for example.  It was a bitch to push it up onto its mainstand, and it still is.  This was the bike that took me on my crazy trip to kuantan n back in 14 hrs on a sunday afternoon in 2005 before my exams.  Good things never lasted, the bike eventually died on me and with repairs estimated to be ard 4k, I decided to send it to its grave early by scrapping it.

The only bikeless period was for 2 mths in Dec 05 to Jan 06, pure torture I tell you.  It’s different when u rely on public transport daily.. a 15 min ride home became 45 mins, and i was very lucky that i never had morning exams that semester, if not dead meat.  Worked less @ kallang, more in town n sch, just to save on travelling time.

A friend sold me the 3rd bike I have, the current Bandit.  I never labelled it “red bandit”, it’s just “1285″.  By reputation, ppl know about this bike and how its ex-owner took it ard malaysia in 4 days, and made it a member of Club 200 by clocking 200km/h on it.  It was sold to a friend, and then to another fren b4 finally coming to me.  The 2nd owner passed away in a riding accident 1 yr ago, and now i’m damn reluctant to sell this bike simply because it not just serves as a memory of my friend, but I need to find a right owner for this bike.  No way am i gonna sell it to a shop or a stranger.  This bike deserves better.

What beckons for my riding, hopefully a bigger bike.  I’ve been putting on the class 2 upgrade for too long, and the bug is biting.  If a car comes my way however, the alternative is to trick up my current ride, basically rebuilding it.

4 years and hopefully more to come.

Charging for Plastic Bags

Wednesday, 11 April 2007
Posted at 16:22.33 and filed under Singapore

I find it very disturbing when ST published news that Ikea will charge up to 10cts per plastic bag, and interviewed some ppl who are less than willing to pay.  A reason that came out was that the bags serve as advertisements, so why should consumers pay.  Very disturbing, considering Ikea is planning to use the money raised for global conservation efforts.

I recall when I was in Taiwan, convenience stores charge for plastic bags.  Nobody really minded, or maybe it’s been a rule for too long.  I don’t mind paying for a bag when I have alot of stuff to carry, and of course if i’m buying one item, I wouldn’t pay for a bag.  Taiwan’s also very advanced in terms of her recycling effort, thrash are sorted out and different types are collected on a fixed day each week.  Monday would be a waste food day, tuesday could be metal cans day.  You miss the truck u wait for next wk, so it’s up to the residents.

I think singaporeans are missing the point altogether, the ppl interviewed are seeing it as Ikea trying to profit from the plastic bags.  As much as the govt tries to campaign for conservation and recycling with that silly green frog, nothing beats the pinch of the wallet.  Time to go beyond campaigning and legislate instead.  Campaigning works for ppl who are not too blind or self-indulged to realise how selfish they have been behaving.

Here is a challenge to the supermarket chains, pls charge for the bags.  I doubt Cold Storage management’s words would come true, they feel they can lose customers this way.  If all the chains are willing to collaborate on this, consumers won’t have a choice and either pay for bags or forgo them.

At least for the MIWs,

3-5% for me… knn

They should get more pay cos they are doing a good job, if not we will be working as maids overseas..

Mabbe that’s not so bad, according to Mr Wang Says So

Let’s take a moment to think about the earning power of (1) Singapore’s poorer citizens and (2) Singapore’s foreign maids.

Let’s say Madam Jin Pai Mia is a 55-year-old spinster belonging to the Low-Income Singaporean category. She works as a cleaner in a commercial office building and earns $900 a month.

Madam Jin takes the MRT to and from work every day. That’s about $1.50 x 2 x 24 days = $72 a month. She pays about $60 for her water and electricity bills at home. She eats three meals a day, each costing an average of $3.00. That’s $3.00 x 3 meals x 30 days = $270 a month on food. Let’s say Madam Jin falls sick once in a while and needs to see the doctor. We’ll put it at $20 a month. She rents a flat from the HDB. Let’s say it’s $250 a month (I don’t know how much it costs - it’s just my guesstimate).

That’s $672 on basic stuff like transportation, water, electricity, food, medical care and accommodation. After deducting $672 from Madam Jin’s monthly salary of $900, she’s left with $228.

Now, a foreign domestic maid gets about $300 a month. However, the maid does not need to spend money on public transport to get to work each day. Her employer pays the electricity and water bills and provides three meals a day. The maid’s accommodation is essentially free. If the maid falls ill, the employer is, by law, responsible for her medical expenses.

So when the maid gets $300 a month, the maid really earns $300 a month.

However, when Madam Jin gets $900, she’s really earning just $228 a month.

Darwinian Evolution at its best

Saturday, 7 April 2007
Posted at 12:24.02 and filed under Two Wheels, Rantings

Who says Darwin is wrong?  Genetically or physically weaker beings are still in danger of being wiped off the face of earth.  I can easily show you a few examples, don’t need to go far out to forest to see this in action.  Just have to go to orchard road, the stretch in front of Wisma Atria and Lucky Plaza.

Everyday here, many ppl are simply trying to commit suicide.  I mean, I cannot explain why they choose to cross the road here at its busiest period.  I am of course guilty of jaywalking from time to time, but yea, some ppl are just lacking common sense.. 5 lanes of road, they have crossed 2 lanes and waiting to cross 3rd lane.  A driver in 3rd lane panics, and horns them even though they have not cut his lane and he’s still 15m or so away.

The response to the horning was pure darwinian.  Instead of staying on the line, they started to cross the 3rd lane.  Now the driver carries on horning, and jams brake.  So what did the weaker species do?

Started running!

Into the 4th lane, and i had to jam brake to avoid hitting them.  Not enough, dashed across last lane in front of a cab that’s just about to move off..  I think they are preprogrammed to run when they hear horns n screeching brakes, just like how deers freeze when headlights shine @ them at night.

Seriously lah, one fine day, someone is gonna get killed on orchard road… Darwin for u…

April Fools Joke

Monday, 2 April 2007
Posted at 12:34.36 and filed under Singapore

I was flipping thru yest’s Sunday Times for the annual April Fools Joke, the one that raised the most suspicion was the Thai scientist developing an odourless durian.  But after reading this morning’s papers, I think I’m wrong.  The real joke was in today’s article about the Civil Service rebutting myths about the Administrative Service and ministers.

Responding to a myth that ministers have iron rice bowls, the rebuttal was that this is totally untrue, as ministers have to face general elections once every 5 yrs.

You tell me lah, when was the last cabinet minister that lost his or her seat?  Seet Ai Mee in 1991 I think, in Bt Gombak.  If this is not April Fools joke, what is then?
