since i blogged..and the break did not answer as many qns as i hoped it would.. but anyway… here’s a bit of trivial talk.

We all know that the National Stadium has been declared close, or so it seems. I paid good money to watch Sg play the aussies in the stadium-closing ceremony, and sat thru perhaps the cheesiest ceremony ever. However, officially closed means unofficially still can stage games. They staged a world cup qualifier there 2 wks ago on the pretext that it would attract large crowds, which didn’t really happen i guess.

Yesterday really is the best, they staged an under-23 friendly between Sg and Cambodia. I really wonder how many ppl went to watch…

Very good day

Sunday, 1 July 2007
Posted at 01:59.36 and filed under Uncategorized

Seriously, i think saturdays can’t get better than this… slept till 10am, before going down to esplanade to usher for Jump.  My lucky day, as i got inner door for once… i can’t tell u how rare that happens these days… n yea Jump was really good, short performance, 1hr 30 mins but really really high octane..

So i went on to national stadium with ziwei n seng for the singapore-australia match and the closing ceremony, and it was a pretty good game despite sg going down 3-0.  The closing ceremony of the stadium was cheesy, to say the very least.. all its saving grace was kit chan singing and a fireworks display.

So we proceeded on to makansutra for supper, n ziwei n i proceeded to harry’s for a beer..the guitarist was damn good…. (makes note about harry’s on sat nites).  Gave him a ride home and took the extra long day via west coast highway.. it’s been a long time that i took a leisure ride, having spent most of time these days while riding being stuck in traffic along dunearn..

btw, Operation Gimme-Two-More-Wheels is underway, i look forward to being domesticated from late aug, from 人包铁 to 铁包人

Graduating Friends

Sunday, 24 June 2007
Posted at 17:11.53 and filed under Uncategorized

Got an offer for those of you who are either not planning to take graduation photos (or too giam to pay hundreds of dollars for a shoot).. I’m offering a free shoot for you or with another friend.  The equation is very simple, you get high resolution digital photos on a cd or dvd for free, while i get to keep the photos as part of my collection and maybe future portfolio.

If you are expecting a very professional shoot with studio lighting, ppl to do makeup for you and to adjust ur gown, I am sorry to disappoint you, haha!  I am but a budding photog who needs to gain experience and expertise in shooting portraits.  We’ll probably stumble along the way on a saturday morning, but i’m sure @ the end of the 2-3 hrs that there would be quite a few keepers of a photo.

So if you’re keen, just contact me… :D

for those of you who feel it’s very hot in singapore, think again.. I landed in bangalore where it was 27 deg C. Transited to delhi and landed in 45 deg C. First nite i slept in an AC room, shiok. Next day transited to agra, freaking FORTY-SEVEN DEGREES CELSIUS.

At this temperature, everything warms up very quickly. Your books become warm, your camera becomes hot.. your cold water if u dun drink fast enuff, becomes lukewarm in 30 mins and warm in an hour.

Yest I drank 6 litres of water, and guess wat..it’s still not enuff…yellow pee…crap…i think i gonna go broke buying water…

O yes, taj mahal is amazing! :)

Yes it’s true. I’m resisting the temptation to bitch about my school, but then I shall not. This is different from NUS, more draconian here i feel. I can tell you about the food here at the canteens. The best food here is, McDonalds. I kid you not. My canteen’s the worse, the PRCs here dun really eat @ the 菜饭 stall. Now that says really alot about its standards..

Anyway i’m bogged down by deadlines, and it’s crappy when you don’t have exams but have tonnes of essays to do.. grr!

And so thailand only got a reprimand for their pitch walkout during the 1st leg match in Singapore.  This despite their players obviously showing dissent, physically and verbally abusing the referee.  The best part was that the coach sanctioned the walkout and he became a national hero back in Thailand.

I guess this is so Asean, the policy of non-interference with neighbours, even though it makes the whole region look like bloody clowns with no backbone.

In prayer

Posted at 01:15.55 and filed under Uncategorized

Good ppl really suffer the most, as so often proven in TV shows, books and real life, but eventually they still come through and end up stronger. A close fren’s bf who just graduated not so long ago is working at an oilfield in China when he kena an accident. Something fell on him and he broke his hip and required stitches on his face.

As if this wasn’t enough to keep his family and my friend worried, it has been really slow getting specialist medical care to him, to decide if it’s suitable to send him back to singapore. And when the help arrived, it came with more bad news that there is internal bleeding of the liver and there’s no way he can be sent back for now.

Fren and bf’s mum are flying over to China tomorrow. May the heavens look down on him and bless him for a speedy recovery..

Early morning cringing

Tuesday, 24 October 2006
Posted at 07:48.39 and filed under Uncategorized, Rantings, Singapore

I woke up really early this morning n went to the market for breakfast for a change. What kind of spoilt my breakfast was this middle-aged lady who obviously is a regular @ the market, judging by the number of ppl whom she greeted. She greeted everyone “HAPPY NEW YR!”.

Seems like there is some problem with our national education, especially on understanding other races and religions. Just because Lunar New Year is the biggest festival for the Chinese doesn’t mean that the biggest fests for other races/ religions must be their new years. Try wishing a Christian happy new yr on 25th Dec then.

Shit!

Monday, 23 October 2006
Posted at 00:27.50 and filed under Uncategorized, Rantings

Make no mistake, your eyes are not playing tricks on you. The title is Shit! and of cos we are gonna discuss shit. You really thought that it’s shit as in shit, something gone wrong. No, it’s literal.

Most ppl would consider shitting to be highly-private activities, incl me. I mean, the removal of waste material from the body is like the bangla worker clearing the thrash @ the refuse centre for the hdb estate. It’s a necessary job, we appreciate it but that doesn’t mean that we are gonna celebrate it right?

Recently I’ve been surrounded by ppl who discusses shitting so openly that it makes me cringe sometimes. Talk about the mild cases first. Friends who are chatting with me over msn or in person, all is fine until they say “brb, gtg toilet”. Believe me, that is enough info liaoz, I dun need to noe wat you are going to do in the toilet. It’s ok, it’s not gonna raise my IQ or make my day to know what you’re doing in the toilet. Of cos some of them has to tell me, “i gonna shit” or “i gonna take a dump”.

Shitting is private, i dun even like to use a cubicle in a public toilet next to another cubicle where someone is obviously shitting. No i dun believe in “Shitting in unison” or “Giving each other moral support”. I dun wanna smell yours.

Not sure if anyone else saw this ad, but a nutrition company that was trying to peddle fibre pills put this ad in one of the local papers, Today or ST, can’t remember.

Floater or Sinker? The next time you visit the toilet and before you flush, take a look at your faeces. If it is a floater, it means that you have enough fibre in your diet. If it is a sinker, it means that you don’t have enough fibre. So are you a floater or a sinker? =)

Thanks to this ad, i’m looking down into the toilet bowl with greater detail these days. How bout those wanna-float-cannot-float-wanna-sink-cannot-sink types huh?

My mum is another one. She has a weak bowel so she always finds herself in situations where she has to cheong for toilet. Once in a while when she’s home n she needs the toilet, then zhun zhun both toilets are occupied. She will never bang the door when my tenants are inside, only bang door if me, my pa or my sis. 快点!!给我用!! 要出来了!! So even if u’re naked n half-soaped up while bathing, u better get ur ass out of the toilet. Failing to do so will result in retribution later.

So happens that last wk she chased my dad out from toilet while he was showering halfway. After that it would usually turn out to be peaceful until she came out w/o flushing n said that my dad’s underwear fell into the toilet bowl n she pooped all over it.
. …. ………. …………….

My dad to his credit suggested disposing it, but insisted that my mum had to retrieve it herself. No person is going to rumage thru his/her poop, much less someone’s else. So my mum, in her usual melodramatic self went to the kitchen, all the time muttering “臭死了”. Came back with a plastic bag to cover her hand b4 reaching in to pick out the underwear AND THEN PROCEEDING TO WASH IT. All the time telling me to come n see, of cos i refused.

I’m sorry if i have caused you to lose your lunch or appetite. haha!

For all the effort and money that the govt throws into getting ppl to speak proper english, so that we can better present ourselves to the world, and all it takes is some govt organisation to screw it up by doing something like this:

Today is day 4 of commencement, so far only didnt work for this morning..and tml morning finally my turn. It is something that i’ve been hoping for to arrive soon, yet when it’s so close, there is a weird feeling. Have done i think 30 comm. ceremonies over 2 yrs, now finally my turn. Incidentally this is gonna be the 1st time that i’m part of the audience in UCC Hall.

Anyway this yr’s ceremonies have been less stressful for me? Less chances to do packing, need to blood the newbies. So that means more chances for me to do other positions, more relaxed. Last time doing commencement liaoz, dun need to chiong so much.

Wish me luck tml, that i dun fall when going up stage, or let my mortarboard drop when receiving my scroll.

And so it seems that because I’m either not a known donor to NUS, or they already gave up on asking me for donations, NUS have decided to try its luck with my dad. Luckily I saw the letter, it’s weird to see an NUS letter addressed neither to me nor my sis.. So i opened it up…

This speaking-to-my-dad policy makes me feel like a kid u noe, like i can’t afford to donate 100 bucks.. now i noe how the AOL victim felt like when the CSO asked to speak to his dad instead…

Back from army

Saturday, 1 July 2006
Posted at 21:57.01 and filed under Uncategorized, Musings, Rantings

and it’s been a pretty good time actually, come to think of it. Other than the chance to meet up with old pals and meet some new ppl, it was also a chance to get away from the civilian world for a while. Not that i really hate the civilian world or love them military one, but I always feel that having some variety in your life is good.

Of cos this time round we have a new boss, who was called up for his 1st ICT in almost 10 yrs. I’m in the manpower branch, so that makes him the unit’s manpower officer, or what we call S1. 2.5 yrs of NSF and clerking taught me many things, one of which is the selective respecting of ppl who have a higher rank than me (anything above CPL). By respect, i dun mean the one that i give to his rank, that is a must in a regimental environment. I’m more concerned whether the person is able to command real respect. S1 rates our performance, we rate his too. For me, my boss should either take good care of the men, or really know his stuff and makes sure we know our stuff. Best is both.

If the boss lacks the former, he can still command the branch and work can get done, even though morale may not be at the peak.

If the boss lacks the latter, he would need capable staff who are willing to work for him since he takes care of them.

If the boss lacks both, he can go fly kite liaoz. That’s my boss, who is scared to get arrowed, who is not worried to arrow us to do stupid things, who does not protect us from external arrows from irrelevant ppl.. 8 more ICTs with him, prepare to die liaoz..

On another note, we had a 2 very good evenings on wed n thurs, our last nights in ICT. Wed, after coming back from the exercise, immediately booked out go Jurong point for dinner, then West Coast Recreational Centre for pool and bowling. Thurs did the same thing. Now back sore, arms sore… shiok…

Very long time never post any song lyrics, this is one of my fav grps. Click more for the full lyrics, msn/email me if u want the song. ;)

Should I Stay by Dreamz FM

Had a drive Driven by your love But when you messed around I lost the drive I found

Thought you needed Needed someone true But you changed your mind Or had I failed you?

Wish you’d been Careful with my heart But you tore it apart And broke an angel’s heart

The kiss was true Has to end somehow But I am livin’ proof of what love is about

It’s hard holding you Loving you, losing you It’s sad to be true And be fooled by you I don’t know (I don’t know) I gotta know Should I stay or should I go?

Quality of Lecturers, or should it be the lack of it?

Thursday, 23 March 2006
Posted at 19:06.46 and filed under Uncategorized, aNUS, Rantings

I’m sure many ppl have read about the ntu student who is a malaysian scholar who emailed the entire ntu student population. His main bitching point was about the standard of english that his lecturers spoke. He said that since he’s a scholar and he doesn’t have to pay sch fees, he feels indignant for other students paying 6k per yr and getting crap english, and he’s hoping to rally support for petitionin the admin

I read the email and seriously his english sucks ass, i tot he was a prc..but yea that’s besides the point. I can understand how he is feeling, in the sense that we are paying 6k a yr, we should be able to get ourselves some decent lecturers. That however is not the case in aNUS as well, where the standards of lecturers are sometimes questionable.

Being in aNUS for almost three yrs, i have been lectured by PRCs, Indians, Germans, Englishmen, Malaysian, i think thats about it. A main problem is that aNUS shifted from a teaching university to a research-intensive one. This of cos is beneficial to the university, as it would raise the profile of the uni as a research hub. Singapore as a result would also obtain more clout in the research world, be it science or arts. Professors are tenured, PhD holders are employed mainly because they can contribute primarily to the research, not because they can or want to teach.

Some of these faculty members also know that, they know that they can’t teach for nuts. Their strengths lie in research, and they are definitely experts in their fields of specialities. It becomes convenient to make it a part of their requirements for some of them to teach a relevant module to undergraduates.

Teaching however is not something that one learns to do in graduate school, or for that matter in XYZ lab. I can be an expert bike rider but that doesnt mean that i can teach a noob to ride a bike like me. It doesnt mean that i noe everything about riding and bikes, that it automatically means that i’m a good teacher.

Well i will say this, for the standard of some of the professors’ teaching, we are better off employing masters holders or fresh PhD chaps who are of cos not as expert in their fields but have the passion to teach. Let the research ppl just do research, we dun need them to come and do a poor job teaching undergrads, and i bet they can’t be bothered, judging by the standard of notes provided by some of the physics lecturers (Read: recycling notes for 3-4 sems, or direct copy-paste from textbooks). We are paying 6k odd per yr to get a good education, you are taking the money to employ research ppl and @ the same time compromising on the standards of the undergraduates, who are your main customers.

I will also never forget how Ah Bao didnt bother changing his MM1 notes to read “Sem 1 AY2004/05″ from “Sem1 AY2003/2004″; and walking into tut classes empty handed. Lecturers like him only help to kill off the interest of the students taking the module.

A good teacher not just imparts knowledge to his or her student, he or she also inspires them to want to find out more about that subject. They also serve as role models for their students. I am glad to have some very passionate teachers throughout my education, incl in nus. I will never forget how prof sow always explained things nicely to us back in yr 1 lab, and prof shen arranging extra classes for us on saturday for E&M, and also giving the class 50 bucks to buy food for lunch that day. Prof Englert may set very tough papers and tut qns but u can see that he genuinely cares for us by explaining properly as long as we too make an effort to understand QM2.

How to 十年树木,百年树人 when you dun get good gardeners?
