Check out the mtv, circa 1986

a-ha is a Norwegian band who were most popular in the UK and the USA during the 1980s, but continued to be globally successful in the 1990s and 2000s. The trio, composed of lead vocalist Morten Harket, guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy (known as Pål Waaktaar until 1991) and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, formed in 1983 and left Norway for London in order to make a career in the music business. The origin of the name a-ha comes from the title of an early song. After checking dictionaries in several languages, they found out that “a-ha” was an international way of expressing recognition, with positive connotations. It was short, easy to say and unusual.

Sales (of Take on Me)were aided in the US by a music video on MTV that mimicked the climactic scene from the Ken Russell film Altered States. The video used a sketchy animation / live action combination called “Rotoscoping” (in which the video is first shot on normal video, then each frame is hand-traced over to give the animated effect) that tells a fantasy thriller story to the song. a-ha was also nominated for Best Video for “Take On Me” at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1986.

Worked at Backstreet Boys concert on Tuesday, and in honour of the 5 not-so-young singers (can i even call them that?) on stage who had gajazillions of gals screaming for them, presenting today’s wiki

Extract:

Equally important to the group’s commercial success is the group’s image, carefully controlled by managing all aspects of the group’s dress, promotional materials (which are supplied to teen magazines), and music videos, the most famous boy band manager being Lou Pearlman. Typically, each member of the group will have some distinguishing feature and be portrayed as having a particular personality stereotype, such as “the baby,” “the bad boy,” “the nice boy.” Whilst managing the portrayal of popular musicians is as old as popular music, the particular pigeonholing of boy band members is a defining characteristic of boy and girl bands.

This is on time though… ;)

Eid ul-Fitr

The Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. On the day of the celebration, a typical Muslim family gets up very early and attends special prayers held only for the occasion in big mosques, in large open areas, stadiums or arenas. The festivities and merriment start after the prayers with visits to the homes of friends and relatives and thanking the Creator for all blessings. Eid al-Fitr is a time to come together as a community and to renew friendship and family ties. This is a time for peace for all Muslims in the world to devote to prayers and mutual well-being.
